About this book

The 2019 fourth edition is the classroom and homework companion to a larger multimedia French programme. Its front matter documents development within the University of Texas at Austin’s Department of French and Italian and COERLL. Chapters are organised around situations and themes, including introductions, travel, food, home, study and professional life. The guidance for using the resource distinguishes vocabulary preparation, pronunciation, video work and online grammar from in-class practice. The PDF contains the printed learning activities; the programme’s recordings and interactive exercises are accessed through the official website.

The attached edition contains 345 PDF pages, including front matter. Cover: source edition cover rendered from the PDF. The textbook and its original notices are retained; Academic Master’s study material is separate from the source text.

Book summary

Study overview of the reviewed opening

The opening guidance presents language learning as a cycle of preparation, observation and practice. Vocabulary is organised into meaningful groups, and students are asked to notice associations, cognates and word families. Listening to pronunciation accompanies that written preparation rather than being treated as a separate optional task.

Video materials introduce chapter themes, show vocabulary in cultural settings and present interviews with French speakers and American learners. The guide describes repeated viewing with different purposes: first recognising words, then understanding the surrounding message and finally completing a related written task. Transcripts and translations are available within the wider resource, but students are encouraged to attempt listening before depending on them.

Grammar study is connected with the companion Tex’s French Grammar site, where explanations and practice prepare learners for classroom use. The verified chapters move through everyday themes such as greetings, holidays, people, food, city life and work. This organisation connects language forms with communicative situations. The overview covers the textbook’s introductory guidance, not a chapter-by-chapter account of the exercises. Audio, video and interactive tasks remain on the official learning sites and are not embedded in the hosted PDF.
