Impact Of Internet Socialization On Social Connectivity

Today’s world-changing technology has enabled people to communicate through the internet. More than two-thirds of the world’s population is using the internet to connect, meet new people, and make friends. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat have over 3 billion active users. WhatsApp, skype, video calls, email, and chat messages, among other communication services, have turned the world into a small globe and have allowed people to communicate efficiently with each other. But perhaps what we should be asking ourselves is whether the internet has brought us together or is just physically pulling us from each other.

Socializing is a necessity for any humankind. Internet communication is allowing us to connect with different people. Imagine a world without connection. Any normal being will get exhausted from loneliness and boredom. Internet connection plays a pivotal role in the healthy overall growth and development of an individual. Research shows that people who are brought up in lonely places tend to experience more problems as they grow up compared to those brought up in the midst of lots of social contacts (Brian, 2017).

The internet allows us to communicate with each other within seconds, regardless of the distance pulling us apart. Internet connections allow us to meet different kinds of people. This creates positive relations across people of different ethnicities by understanding different cultures, hence promoting union and peace. Real social networks and friendship relations have been formed.

Internet socialization helps one to develop self-confidence and interrelation skills, relieves stress and anxiety, and provides a source of fun, joy, and happiness in meeting and making new friends online. Friends, we provide moral, social, and emotional support. One gets occupied with social connection, which prevents one from indulging in evil practices.

On the other side, internet connection has another detrimental effect. Accessibility of the internet in our homes has pulled people away from each other. People will tend to stay at their homes and get reluctant to make physical contact with each other; this slowly kills the warmth of friendship. The human touch. This isolates people and eventually causes the end of connections and relations. Online relationships have also been a major cause of breakups in a relationship.

The internet is also turning people, especially teens, into addicts. One will spend hours surfing and browsing the internet. People are spending hours on the Internet, forgetting their social obligations and duties. This leaves minimum contact with surrounding people, isolating them and making one lose interpersonal communication skills. This causes a negative impact on socializing and connecting with people around.

Internet communication causes a gap bridge between those who can access the network and those who are illiterate or cannot connect via the internet. Making it hardly impossible to socialize. The relations between the young and the old, who are slowly adapting to catch up with technology, are deteriorating. This isolates the relationship between the two groups.

In conclusion, the advantages of internet connection and socialization surpass the disadvantages. If well used, an internet connection makes people more socialized than individualistic. We need to accept and adapt to the changing technology around us.
