The story is in the form of a short novel which is revolving around a man. A man who is mostly thinking about the scenario of death and the afterlife, and he hasn’t had any name. The writer wrote his name as the last man. The story is short and shows the thinking and thoughts of a man. The pattern of the story is not smooth, but it is written well. The last man mostly thinks about how each man or women have to leave the world in one day. The story “The Last Man on Earth” by John Guzlowski demonstrates that each person in the world will die one day, including him. Everyone is busy in their lives and their circumstances, and people are slowly moving towards death.
The story starts with a different joke to attract the audience’s attention towards it. The last man always thinks that his wife farts during sleep, but he is never able to stop her because he listens to it during sleep. When he wakes up in the morning, he complains about the farting with his wife, and she says sorry with a smile all the time. But she never stops farting during the sleep. In reality, cowboys were farting during the night, but the last man thinks that his wife farts all the time. Later on, the writer shows that the last man is praying about the daffodils, and he wants to see them in the coming spring. But God never responded to his prayers like the other prayers. In this part, the writer shows that God never accepts the prayers of the last man, and his prayers remain unaccepted.
Moreover, in the later part of the story, the last man is reading a newspaper in which he read about an accident. In the crash, five family members died, and no one could survive. In the same paper, there is another headline about a storm that killed so many people. Similarly, in another part of the play, the man is looking outside of his window and sees a shadow. He thinks that all individuals in the world are going to die one day, but the shadows could remain forever and never get fainted.
The writer is showing that the last man is thinking about the end of the world or death all the time. He believes that the world will end one day and also the people will die one day. Everything else is meaningless, and everyone is moving toward their end, which is death. But nobody cares that about the death busy in their lives, even the last man dreaming about his death in the story. He saw a nightmare in which a thing killed him brutally, and he was not able to defend himself. It shows that the last man is not thinking about anything else except the death that surrounds him all the time.
This story is written in a way that shows the audience about the remembrance of death. Death is a bitter truth, but that does not mean that one always thinks or remembers it all the time and in all the circumstances, like the last man in the story. Wherever he goes, whatever he reads, he feels about the death and end of the world. It is true that death will attack every human being, but that does not mean one could stop living.
