In the modern world today, the technological advancements changed the entire world and spreading all over it. It includes the technology of internet which is used now to connect with the world. The Internet is the way to communicate and connect with every area or country of the world. Also, its use gives an opportunity to gain any information within no time. In an article “Social Consequences of the Internet for Adolescents: A Decade of Research,” two authors Patti M. Valkenburg and Jochen Peter explores the use of internet among the adolescents and describes its social consequences. In this paper, the important points and aspects of this article will be discussed briefly.
The adolescents and youngsters today, are the ones who are the consistent users of the internet and spend a lot of time on it. They spend more time on the internet daily as compare to the adults as well as they are the social media users more than the adults. Social media is a platform to communicate with the global world and its different countries people. Adolescents mostly use the internet to use the social media. Nowadays instant messaging is the most used technology among the adolescents to connect with the world; it includes popular instant message apps like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, we chat, Viber and much more. These apps give the opportunity to connect anywhere in the world free with the use of the internet. The Internet is giving so many advantages to its users as well as many disadvantages to its users.
Adolescents are using the internet and social media and providing self-disclosure to the world. Self-disclosure refers to information about a person’s identity which is exposed on the Internet and anyone in the world can see it. Its biggest example is facebook which is providing the opportunity to the individuals to use the self-disclosure. According to the authors of the article, the study of different researchers explains that it is reasonable for us to consider that the online self-disclosure opportunities and use show the positive relationship between two major points, which include online communication and social connectedness of the people. Moreover, further study is required to investigate its positive and negative impacts and aspects.
Many recommendations and reasons are explained in the article. Like the online communication might be better and positive interaction as compare to face to face communication method between two or more people. It includes several important points like the self-disclosure, or the positive interaction of the online communication between two people is the result of care, friendship, and love between both individuals. The authors of the article suggest many further points for the future study in this perspective or area. It includes the different use of social media apps and their results, the use of instant messengers on public chat rooms, effects and impacts of different communication technologies. The use of social media and its increased used among the adolescents has positive as well as negative impacts which should be explored by the future researchers. Its positive impacts might include the positive interaction, and best time also its negative impacts might include the cybercrime and online harassments.
