Introduction
There are several problems that create hurdles in the way of unity and the process of making the world a better place for all to live. A significant achievement in today’s world will be demolishing the discrimination which women are facing and the violation of their rights. Discrimination can easily be defined as the treatment of someone or any particular group differently, which is worse on the basis of religion, skin colour, and gender. The known issue around the globe is gender discrimination, which is being done against women. This type of discrimination happens when the treatment of women is less favourable as compared to men just because of the gender of women. This research essay will serve the purpose of examining the discriminatory treatment of women by keeping opportunities from them and the right to vote being delayed with reference to their civil rights (Kimmel, 2017).
Discussion
It is not a local issue that women face discrimination, and it is not limited to developing countries but to developed countries as well. Women are being taught that they are less deserving and weak on the basis of their physical structure. From the workplace to even in their homes, women have always been the victims of discrimination and sexual harassment. Their social life has also been affected by the discrimination against them, and their contribution to the community is always being undermined. The first wave which was started in the early 18th century and stayed active till the beginning of the 20th century for their socio-economic rights. The main concerns which were raised during the movement were the rights to vote and rights to own property, which, till that movement, were discriminated against just because of their gender. It was Virginia Wolf who put the foundation of the idea that women should’ve equal rights, which have always been violated. Before that movement, on the basis of gender, women had faced discrimination that took away their opportunities, which were their rights (Ross et al., 2016).
American Civil Rights movement was the second movement that started in the mid-1950s, and the main aim of that movement was to end racial segregation and discrimination against women. Social change means bringing a change in the attitude regarding the interrelations and interactions among them. There are relationships among all human beings referred to as social, and the change in that relationship is the social change in society. There were several movements that have been raised in the past to bring social change, and the main social impact that happened under the social movement was the rights that were given to women. The women’s movement in India was the most significant movement, and it took place in different parts of the nation. The freedom movement, which granted the Indians freedom from Britain in the year 1947, was the most struggling, and both men and women took equal part in contributing in all forms. The freedom fighters and leaders of India started the discrimination against women by not including them in the marches against the British. Still, the educated women at that time protested against this discrimination. From that onwards, women came to know their role and power, which they used for freedom, and liberty for their rights was also part of that movement. The main aim of the movement later during the 1960s was to end the sexual harassment and violence against women, which was on the rise. Several of the problems faced by the women were demanding their rights, but they never backed away. They had, in several ways, achieved their aims, and also, in a country like India, started holding political offices (Comte, 2018).
A similar movement also took place in America when women started the movement for their voting rights. The documentary One Woman One showed how much struggle they had to face the first time they left their homes and went to vote. The question is why the women were not able to vote, and it took a while to realize that it was also the right of the women to vote in the elections because they were also part of the country. It was before that, the traditional view was that women were meant to stay at home, do housework and look after the children. This view started being challenged by women in the 19th century when they realized that they had equal rights to men. The legislator and educator realized that neglecting this basic right of women should end, and the future of the country should be equally important for women as it is for men. After a long struggle from the 19th century to the start of the 20th century, women were finally able to achieve this right (Leab, 2018).
Conclusions
The conclusion, after going through the movements and conditions of women before realizing the rights of women briefly, is that no matter how much time it took them they were able to achieve those rights. Their fight against the conservative views and the dominance of men through the traditional views regarding women was rejected because it’s not the place of men to decide the status of women. The known issue around the globe is gender discrimination, which is being done against women.
