Abstract This thesis will argue that the first truly American, iconoclastic, Bohemian subculture coalesced in New York City, downtown in Greenwich Village, at the gathering known as the Pfaff’s Circle. With it, an irreverent worldview, completely unprecedented and uniquely American, was first woven into the social fabric of the culture as writers, artists, and actors of both genders met beneath Broadway.
