Advantages and Disadvantages of Computer

Introduction

A computer is an electronic machine which is often used to compile and sort our information for the purpose of getting desired results. It has a vital importance in our lives because every sphere of the world belongs to the computer. To put in another way, our life is rotating around this electronic machine due to this modern era of technology (Beauvisage, 2009). There is a plethora of research available that discusses the pros and cons of computer use. In the next section, we will try to elaborate on the advantages and disadvantages of computer use in our everyday life cycle.

Advantages of Computer

There are plenty of advantages and disadvantages of the computer use. If we talk about the advantages first, computers can compile a huge amount of information in a faster and compact way than any other machine in the world. A computer is a multitasking machine because it can be used to perform various jobs at the same time. Concisely speaking, the major advantages can be presented in a better way with the help of bullet form as follows:

  • Used to calculate complex mathematical problems
  • Store plenty of data in a compact way
  • Most widely used to prepare business reports and other official documents
  • The use of computers minimized the cost of different transactions
  • Faster than man in processing information from one place to another
  • It is the ultimate choice for kids to play games (Subrahmanyam et, al., 2000)
  • If we attach the internet to a Computer, then it becomes matchless

Disadvantages of Computer

On the other hand, if we talk about the disadvantages of computers, they can be summarised in bullet form as follows:

  • The use of computers has a massive negative impact on the youth, keeps them busy surfing different social media websites like Facebook, Instagram, etc. and restricts them from becoming an active member of the creative community (Gross, 2004).
  • Technology is changing day by day and involves a huge amount of additional costs.
  • A skilled person is required to operate the computer because some special expertise is required to perform the advanced programs.
  • Viruses are the threats which can destroy the compiled information in computers.
  • Last but most importantly, the computer is the main factor in the reduction in employment opportunities because several tasks can be performed without the use of labour (Wang, & Jung, 2011).

In a nutshell, there are so many advantages and disadvantages of the use of a computer, but in general, we can say that it is the most effective innovation that has ever been made by a man. It has a significant impact on our daily personal and private lives, and the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
