National Guard at the Border

The current administration has faced challenges in the implementation of the immigration laws. The president has been proactive on the matter, and most communities see this as a deliberate attempt to lock out immigrants. The introduction of National Guard troops in California is seen a significant step towards helping the Trump administration achieve their policies (Wildermuth N.p). The National Guard officers are allowed to assist in combating criminal gangs along the border. They are also allowed to deal with illegal firearms and drug smugglers. On the other hand, the officers are not allowed to take part in law enforcement activities that affect the locals. They are also not allowed to arrest individuals that may violate immigration laws.

The National Guard is funded by the federal government as the Trump administration hopes to encourage more states to adopt the move. The federal government hopes to support the new policy until the 30th of September when the federal fiscal year comes to an end (Wildermuth N.p). States such as Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico are being encouraged to take up the move. This is reinforced by the fact that they will not be spending their local resources on the National Guard.

The move by the Trump administration can be termed as militarizing the border. The current administration had made it clear that they would build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico (Rivas N.p). It seems that the administration is making good their promise by creating a human wall. The local enforcement agencies should be allowed to deal with immigrants in a manner that is consistent with the state policies. Sanctuary states should be allowed to provide a haven for the immigrants without interference from the federal government.
