The new legislative bill passed by Georgia’s government has been subjected to multiple criticisms and backlashes by the public and corporate sectors. According to various corporate business executives, this new voting bill limits access to cast votes. There will be new restrictions on the number of drop boxes, mandatory evidence of identity for absentee voting, immense legislative control over the procedure of elections, and restriction of facilities (food and water) for voters lined up in queues. This bill will hinder the voting path of people of a different colour. Many corporate companies, civil rights groups, and democratic officials are condemning this new bill. This critical analysis will analyze the article “Major U.S. Companies Take Aim at Georgia’s New Voting Restrictions” and explore the corporate actions of the Coca-Cola Company against this new legislation.
Coca-Cola is one of the largest companies in Georgia and is also one of the corporate entities that have opposed this new legislation. According to the chief executive of Coca-Cola, James Quincey, this new legislation is making voting difficult for people rather than easier. Therefore, the Coca-Cola Company does not support this new legislation for elections because it diminishes the access and convenience of a voter. The company’s ethical principles support “easy accessibility, voter convenience, and election integrity”. The company wants to achieve “political neutrality” and reduce “voter suppression” (Stankiewicz, 2021). However, this legislation is against all of the company’s ethical principles.
As far as my opinion is concerned related to this corporate backlash against the new legislation, the corporate sector, including all other sectors, has full rights and freedom to raise their voice of opinion against the ruling government. This corporate action taken by the Coca-Cola Company is wise, ethical, and legally approved. People of colour, especially the black community, are subjected to marginalization after the new voting restrictions included in the election bill. We are living in a democratic world where everyone has the right to raise their voices while conforming to the ethical and legal principles of the government.
