Learning in Medieval Western Europe vs. Modern World

The medieval learning system in colleges and universities was markedly distinctive from that which today’s modern educational world is familiar. The monasteries throughout Europe in the middle ages were the major educational centers where the educational facility was only provided to those who were in need of it-mainly the clergy. This means that Church schools were replaced with Town Schools as they could not handle the educational needs of middle-aged men. However, clergy could receive classical education in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin as classical texts were available more than other curriculums. (History 111 spring 2022 Medieval Universities with Narration) This essay evaluates the learning in Medieval Western Europe, the curriculum mainly people were taught in comparison with learning in today’s modern world.

Throughout the medieval educational system, Latin was the medium of instruction. In middle Ages, a university scholar was a cleric who thought learning Latin was a compulsion as a man in holy orders however others did not forsake Latin as the religious vocation. The degree of Baccalaureate or Bachelor of Arts that was regarded as a preliminary study to mastership was awarded to those who completed the essential academic studies course that comprised the study of dialectic, grammar, arithmetic, geometry, rhetoric, astronomy, and music (History 111 spring 2022 Medieval Universities with Narration). This course of study was known as quadrivium which was followed by Greek philosophy, Hebrew, and History after which a degree of Master of Arts was awarded as a fitness certificate to teach at any college or university. The quadrivium study comprised the basic essence of the university curriculum and therefore not taught but was performed for the moral excellence, development of interpersonal skills, and intellect (History 111 Spring 2022 Medieval Universities with Narration). Contrary to the Medieval educational system, the majority of Earth’s population in today’s modern world is obligated to attend colleges and universities with no gender discrimination. The contemporary individual in a school, college, or a university is free to choose their future vocations and interests with their own values, convictions, and peace of mind, unlike the middle Ages’ men who were restricted to learn an already established curriculum.

In a nutshell, the learning and education system was overseen by the church in Medieval Western Europe and only a few people had the privilege to read and write. Whereas, in today’s modern world, every single inhabitant of the Earth has access to all forms of knowledge whether it is of religion or technology and is able to do things that a medieval man could not think about.
