Flight nursing is a specialized field of nursing who are trained to provide pre-hospital critical care to the patients during flights.
Flight nurses have distinguished and advanced levels of nursing skills and knowledge, strong leadership skills, and excellent decision-making abilities to rescue people who are suffering from certain diseases. They have a strong background in an emergency or intensive care nursing practice. They are continuously exposed to traumatic events which are unexpected and uncontrollable. These traumatic events include physical trauma, for instance, injuries, malicious wounding, myocardial infections, overdoses, critical pediatric cases, and shocks.
Flight nurses are vulnerable to fatigue because they provide services in high-pressure
situations. They feel burnout because they are expending too much time and effort as they are firsthand witnesses of trauma and major illnesses. Flight nurses are vulnerable to compassion fatigue and work-related emotional fatigue. They are working with other health care professionals in the medical team during the flight to benefit patients.

A flight nurse is a licenced nurse who offers pre-hospital emergency services to patients during flights. A rescue aircraft includes a flight nurse along with flight medics, and respiratory practitioners, as well as a flight physician. They have to follow clinical and flight protocols. They are also held responsible for following organizational standards. Recording patient`s information from time to time is also part of their job. Here, it is important to note that flight.
A flight nurse is responsible for evaluating the needs of in-flight patients. They are also responsible for the safety and comfort and maintain patient care. They are providing services with both traumatic and medical issues. They are authorised as a licenced nurse and have a minimum of two years of experience in mobile ICU. An ideal flight nurse has an advanced cardiac life support diploma along with a “pediatric advanced life support certificate”. They are a certified flight registered nurse and a certified emergency nurse. They have expertise in vasoactive medications, mechanical ventilation, and demanding care facilities. They have to work in a small space and make prompt decisions in extreme conditions.
Flight nurse works in civilian aviation and military aviation. They are trained for such emergencies to rescue people during flights. Flight nursing is a challenging and stressful job because they are responsible for making tough decisions during emergency situations. They ensure proper use of available equipment and provide first aid to the patients before landing to save the lives of critical patients.
