Cultural Mash-up & Sor Juana

Part 1

After reading about Sor Juana and understanding her poem Hombre Necios, I am in view that she used her poetry to address societal issues as the poem is a powerful critique of male hypocrisy, impulsiveness, and selfishness in their interactions with women. Sor Juana as a remarkable Spanish Golden Age writer questions the different standards applied to vulnerable individuals in society, especially women, based on whether they comply or resist powerful people’s advances, such as men. In my opinion, the poem is an ingenious work that delves into the paradox of self-perception and exposes the unequal treatment of women by men because men tarnish their own image by projecting their flaws and discriminating against women.

My favorite stanza from the poem is “Silly, you men-so very adept / at wrongly faulting womankind, / not seeing you’re alone to blame / for faults you plant in a woman’s mind” because this line sets the tone for the entire poem and also explains the absurdity of human behavior. However, the least favorite stanza from the poem is “For plain default of common sense, / could any action be so queer / as oneself to cloud the mirror, / then complain that it’s not clear?” because it highlights the irony of men. The stanza strangely depicts the absurdity of men who cannot see their own faults but criticize women over petty things.

Part 2

The influence of Spanish and indigenous cultures on modern Mexican culture is rich and multifaceted tracking back to 16th century civilization. Modern Mexican culture reflects a blend of Spanish and indigenous customs with diverse traditions, languages, and histories which have played significant roles in shaping local cultures. For instance, indigenous terms were directly adopted into Spanish, resulting in a rich blend of vocabulary as some words have up to nine representations different in fusions due to variations in indigenous languages and cultures. Moreover, the rich tapestry of art, culture, language, traditions, and music reflects centuries of shared history between indigenous and Spanish cultures that has left a significant mark on modern Mexican identity. One thing that has amazed me is that the blend of Spanish and indigenous traditions has not created any controversy, but this “blend” has resulted in a colorful and unique cultural landscape for the modern Mexican identity.

The favorite product that I have found from the fascinating blend of diverse indigenous and Spanish traditions is Mariachi music. The significant thing about this music is that it combines indigenous instruments and rhythms with Spanish melodies showcasing the cultural amalgamation.
