Board Structure Of NAACP

Committees are important segments of an organizational management team and perform different tasks depending on the mission of their respective organizations. This discussion has chosen to examine the board structure and the role of committees in one non-profit organization referred to as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People NAACP.

The paper will also recommend how the committees or board structure could be changed to improve the board performance and organizational effectiveness of the NAACP. The mission of NAACP is to eliminate discrimination based on race and to ensure the social, educational, economic, and political equality of rights of all persons regardless of their background.

The board of directors of NAACP consists of a maximum of 64 elected members from each of the seven regions. The board of directors holds four meetings per year at a designated place. Additionally, the chair might call a special meeting at any time of the year with the objective of the meeting stated in the notice or demand receipts (NAACP, 2016). One-half of the voting members constitutes a quorum. Other than the board of directors, the NAACP has several committees tasked with different responsibilities. The committee of communication is tasked with the role of promoting media content in line with the fundamental goals of the NAACP. The economic development committee is tasked with the role of promoting entrepreneurship growth and creating more employment opportunities for African Americans. The religious affairs committee is tasked with providing a moral and ethical understanding of the struggle for civil rights. The legal redress committee is tasked with investigating all reported cases and supervising all litigation in which the NAACP is interested.

The board structure, together with the committees of NAACP, can be changed to improve board performance and organizational effectiveness. The following recommendations can help the NAACP improve the performance and effectiveness of its board and committees. That is a regular assessment of the board and the committees. Regular assessments should cover all the members of the committees and the board, including the chairs. The areas that should be assessed include communication issues, the board’s relationship to management, the board process, the effectiveness of executive sessions, behaviors, the development of the board’s agenda, and the role of the lead independent director. Even though the chairs are tasked with leading the members, an organization can be more effective if the chair and directors are open to feedback regarding their leadership (Au and Angelis, 2012). It will also be more valuable if the NAACP board benchmarks itself against other high-performing boards either in the equivalent industry sector or against the top practices in a specific sector.
