A review of the government’s role through Thoreau’s thoughts

Introduction

The government is considered to be the authority that governs the state or nation by developing and implementing policies regarding the well-being of the people living in that nation or country. The understanding of the role of the government should be understood by all the people living in the country, which helps in looking after the progress of any particular current authority ruling. The government is responsible for all the internal and external matters of the country, including the well-being of people, monetary policies, managing law and order, and all the threats that possibly harm the states. Different fields look at the government differently according to the perspective of that particular field. This essay is a compromise of the review of the government’s role through Thoreau’s thoughts on government and the federalist approach, which leads to an understanding of it.

Discussion

The business community looks at the economic role of the government, the field of law and judiciary will look at the constitution, and the general public will evaluate the government by their standard of living. Different countries have different sets of understandings and views on evaluating government roles. American history is full of political changes, from the the civil rights movement to external threats, which had been the influential reason for internal political conditions. Civil disobedience was a significant event in American history that was started by Thoreau. According to his view on the government, a government is best when it interferes the least in the matters of the state. The political conditions were standing at the point, convincing people that the government would soon be reluctant to serve the people. The efficiency and the usefulness of the government were no longer seen. The war between America and Mexico proved that the government was not a useful group that could serve America. The policies that were undertaken during those times were strict enough that people’s lives were in miserable condition due to all the barriers. Thoreau widely criticized the policy on trade and commerce. The movement started by explaining that it is not necessarily that the current government should leave right away, but the movement is for the reform which is badly needed. He argued that democracy means having rights for all people, and the democracy that was being practiced during that time was practiced on the basis of the majority, but it should be based on conscience. People should decide for themselves what is right and what is wrong; rather, the government should make the decisions on their behalf. The restrictions to that much extent during that time were influencing people to commit crimes, and Thoreau was against such laws and regulations, which forced people to follow them.

The African American civil rights movement and the Civil War, which was proven to be the most desperate period in American history, led to the devastation of the social and economic condition of the country. The Federalist part came into being with the view that all the right to form laws and implement should be held by the center, which was on the northern side, but on the south side, antifederalists were strongly against this view and were claiming that the rights should be distributed among all the 52 states of America. The Federalist Party was comprised mostly of the northern side, which consisted of industrialists. The southern side were those whose economic conditions were dependent on farming. The main goal of the Federalist Party was to set the slaves free and give the women the right to work, and in the meantime, the federal government would pass all the laws that all states had to follow.

Conclusions

The best form of government is one where importance should be given to people rather than politicians serving their own purpose according to their own will. There are several forms of government that have been witnessed by America, but they have been mostly criticized because all the wars they have been engaged in were unfair. If we look at the current biggest problem, it is the privacy rights of the people, which are being violated for security reasons. The private lives of people are not being protected by the government. In fact, they are themselves violating it. The government’s role is to protect people and, in the meantime, implement laws to provide justice. The right to have any opinion and all the opportunity should be given to everyone, and also, they should take care if any right is being violated. The government’s role should be understood by all the people living in the country, which helps look after the progress of any particular current authority ruling. The government is responsible for all the internal and external matters of the country, including the well-being of people, monetary policies, managing law and order, and all the threats that possibly harm the states. Thoreau’s views on the government, which gives liberty to people, and the federalist part for having only one entity that looks for what law is suitable for all, are both good if combined. The lack of one governing body can affect the law and order situation, but strict laws will also make people hate their own country.
