You should write a 1,000 word reflection of learning and skills you have developed related to the role of ethical, social and environmental issues related to a case study theme that you have covered in this module
I have always been interested in learning more about ethical, social, and environmental issues. As the module progressed, however, I was able to use four main cases studies to explore on techniques that would help in reducing carbon footprints that is “Last Straw,” “Eco Go,” “Twin Tap,” and “Cool Pools.” These four case studies have changed my views on carbon and made me realize environmental protection’s importance. Last Straw highlighted the environmental devastation of plastic straws and the need for sustainable alternatives. Implementing a project that aimed to minimize the environmental effect of plastic straws attracted attention to the necessity of carbon offsetting, which led to a wider awareness of how carbon offsetting worked. The Eco-Go example showed how zero-emission or low-emission electric vehicles might be an ecologically friendly transportation solution.
Twin Tap focused on water conservation and efficient water use. Therefore, this showed how installing low-flow taps might save water, illustrating that sustainable development is more than just decreasing emissions and offsetting carbon dioxide. Finally, insulated piping reduced energy usage in the Cool Pools scenario to heat and chill the pool. Hence this reduced energy use, pollutants, and heating and cooling costs. Understanding how insulation cuts energy usage, and emissions made it evident that this was an effective way to reduce emissions. The four scenarios’ continual nagging made me realize sustainability is important in many spheres of life. These events helped me understand reduced emissions, carbon offsetting, water conservation, and renewable energy. The scenarios also stressed the importance of collaboration for sustainable development. They showed how even little changes may improve the environment, showing how crucial it is for the world to follow this course.
Throughout the module, I have learned that I am a visual and kinesthetic learner; thus, these are the best learning styles that suit me better. I realized I would easily understand the concept of the instructor using visual and graphic pictures. The voting measures and graphic results of me and my colleagues’ carbon footprints also surprised me and changed my perspective. That showed me how much our daily actions impact the environment and how urgently we must reduce our carbon footprint. My bad behaviors, such as wasting food, left a significant carbon imprint that surprised me. It showed me that even small changes, like eating less meat, buying used clothes, and using public transit or bicycles, may help the environment. I was surprised by the environmental impact of various actions, much as I was by my coworkers’ carbon footprints.
The visual portrayal of our carbon footprints made it clear that we must reduce them and work toward sustainable development. Seeing how our activities can greatly impact the environment motivated me to change my daily habits. To reduce my carbon footprint, I wish to change my daily routine. I’ll start by wasting less food, buying used clothes, and taking public transportation or biking instead of driving. I will also study ways to save energy, such as turning off equipment and using energy-efficient light bulbs. I will also encourage renewable energy and sustainable development in my town. Even small changes can greatly impact the environment and help promote sustainable development when combined.
Additionally, I learned that I am a kinesthetic learner, as through the model; I could engage in different physical movements and hands-on activities that helped me have a deeper understanding of social, ethical, and environmental issues. By embracing the kinesthetic learning style, I participated in different group discussions and simulations involving physical movement and interactions better to understand social, environmental, and ethical issues. This learning style challenged me to improve my interaction techniques and advance my technology skills.
Developing study skills and knowledge
Throughout the module, I had an opportunity to develop and improve my analytical and thinking skills. Class discussions and exercises let me apply numerous course principles to real-world problems. I learned more about ethical, social, and environmental issues during the module. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) was one of my main subjects. Organizations adopting social and environmental responsibility is CSR. Therefore, this means following the law and practicing ethical and environmentally friendly ways. I learned how organizations must balance the requirements of their employees, customers, shareholders, and the community to achieve ethical and sustainable business practices.
I also learned about sustainable living. I learned about sustainable development and how businesses must balance economic, social, and environmental considerations, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, safeguarding natural resources, and promoting equality. I now understand corporate ethics. Topics encompassed business ethics, the consequences of unethical behavior, and how to identify and solve ethical dilemmas. I also learned how ethical principles might guide workplace ethics.
Wider learning theory
The lesson used constructivism and problem-based learning theories. Problem-based learning fostered active learning, problem-solving, and self-directed learning. I could engage more thoroughly with the class material and build my critical thinking skills because of this good education style. Constructivism theory mainly stressed active engagement with the content, and class materials, ad using real-world difficulties to deepen learning was also used in the course. According to constructivist theory, the key to effective learning is the synthesis of different types of information. Speaking out and asking questions is essential for student learning. Participation in all learning activities is required. The instructor offered weekly literature and online reading materials for the module. Readings helped explain carbon footprint reduction concepts and issues. The papers covered the challenges of lowering carbon footprints and the ways to reduce carbon emissions environmental impact.
Knowledge application
Through the knowledge I have obtained from the module, I would support and encourage sustainable living in my personal and professional life to enhance ethical practices that promote a sustainable society and environment. For instance, as an employee at the ministry of municipality and responsible of projects in the landscape sector, I would defiantly now apply the new knowledge gained from this useful module to lead current and future projects towards reducing energy use, promoting green products, and taking public transportation can minimize carbon footprint. Additionally, I would use the knowledge I acquired throughout the module to encourage corporate social responsibility. Working with such corporations allows advocating for corporate social responsibility policies. Doing so will promote global ethical, social, and environmental sustainability. With the knowledge and skills, I have gained from this module, I will be better equipped to deal with ethical difficulties that may emerge in my personal and professional life and make morally and intellectually satisfying judgments.
Diverse pedagogical techniques, visual and kinesthetic learning can help understand more complex things. If you do this, you may customize your educational experience to suit your needs, making it a better learning experience overall.
In conclusion, the curriculum expanded my understanding of the ethical, social, and environmental issues surrounding the several case study themes. I have a more excellent grasp of the challenges at hand now. Problem-based learning and other pedagogical approaches have helped me succeed in learning. I was able to better grasp and address previously intractable issues as a result. This module’s focus on sustainability education aligns with the learning philosophy’s contextual and interdisciplinary learning emphasis. So, this module emphasizes sustainability education in keeping with the learning philosophy. I am confident that this experience will help me solve ethical, social, and environmental issues in the future.
