Safety Net Or Death Trap? Case Study

1) Do you agree with the decision to fire Luther?

I agree with the decision to fire Luther from the job, however from a psychological perspective he had done the wrong thing due to the mental pressure. He was well aware of the fact that how Joe died, and this became a reason that he started considering that working in the position of Joe could lead him to death. This factor leads him to not follow the instructions provided by the foremen. As a result, he got suspended, which was the right option because, in the work scenario, he should be responsible for his duties and instructions.

2) Who was really at fault for Joe’s death?

There were several reasons for Joe’s death. One of the reasons is that one of Joe’s jobs on the changeover crew was to climb out on the net and retrieve the parts that had dropped from the previous run. The net needed a repair, but the changeover crew neglected this factor because it was a minor rip. One other reason is that Joe had a small brain tumour, but the medical examiner did not provide more details about it. The internal bleeding of his mind became the reason that he fell to the concrete floor. Another reason is that he consumed alcohol just a few hours before his death, but that was not high enough to consider that he was out of his mind or could forget his duties.

3) How could Joe’s death have been prevented?

Joe’s death could have been prevented by applying important and needed safety measures. All staff members should be aware of the fact that they are not allowed to consume alcohol at work. Moreover, proper medical checkups could be held to determine all the relevant medical conditions of the employees so that these details could be used properly in the future. The net that was not repaired should be repaired. Minor factors could lead to disastrous outcomes so the staff should never be careless about a small incident or a repair, they should conduct proper methods to analyze all the parts that need repair and then repair it.

4) The Teamster local has filed a grievance against the company, contesting Luther’s dismissal. What do you believe will be the most likely outcome?

Two possibilities will be most likely the outcomes. One is that the company will ignore the grievance and hire a new member or assign another person who could take on Luther’s responsibilities. Second, the company will consider the case and all its important factors, including the psychological factors of Luther’s mind, and hire him back to perform his duties.
