Workplace Ethics And Laws

Introduction

The most significant areas of an organization are workplace ethics and law, as they affect the motivational level of employees. Workplace ethics and laws are made to ensure a safe and legal working environment so that proper discipline can be maintained and employees make their contribution to the company by observing ethical practices to achieve better results. During my time working with a company, I learned and experienced workplace ethics, which are instrumental in personal and organizational growth. However, there is always a risk of a lack of knowledge about the rights of employees and the work ethics and laws that they are required to follow. Hence, training is instrumental in an employee’s better performance and know-how. (Levinson, A. R. 2018). In this regard, the following are the key elements based on the learning experience that I also conveyed in a training session.

Discipline

The most important element for an organization and its employees is discipline. I worked in an environment where discipline was a key ingredient. Discipline refers to a policy or set of rules that every employee should follow. I conveyed the following points to employees concerning discipline as workplace and personal ethics:

  • Punctuality
  • Formal reporting to a supervisor
  • Notify in case of absence
  • Seek proper approval for leaves
  • During working hours, only important calls are to be answered
  • No rude behaviour toward colleagues
  • Develop cooperative attitude
  • Complete the task in the given time frame
  • Don’t stretch your break timings; always follow the allocated time for a break
  • Don’t take credit for other people’s work
  • Don’t alter any sensitive information that may affect the company by any means
  • No harassment whatsoever to any colleague
  • Once you complete your shift, log out properly so that HR can maintain proper working times.
  • Develop a friendly environment in the company
  • In case of any issues with colleagues, report it to HR and don’t get involved in any dispute personally.

Further, I conveyed to them that the rules, as mentioned above, are the company’s manual. Also, I gave them a sense of ownership, i.e., we all are part of this company, and we should follow these principles to achieve better results collectively. Actually, in an organization, teamwork matters. So, I underlined the importance of working together. To develop all these ethics, I stressed a value-based approach, which includes honesty, trustworthiness, integrity, a sense of responsibility and high moral values. Although these are personal traits, reminding them to employees politely and professionally also makes a difference. Everyone must respect the workplace and obey the rules as standard procedures for their own and organizational progress. Self-commitment is also a vital aspect that yields productivity in an organization (Timming et al.). I conveyed all these points to employees during a training session.

Moreover, I highlighted the importance of health and safety in the workplace. Health and safety should be a top priority while working. Following are the health and safety practices that everyone should follow

  • Do not work if you are unwell.
  • Safely head to the assembly point in case of an emergency, such as if a fire breaks out.
  • If you feel threatened, immediately report it to the police.
  • If you notice any colleague is seriously getting unwell, call the ambulance immediately. Don’t delay, as your safety is of utmost importance to the company.
  • Use the First Aid box in case of any minor injury or bleeding, and always assist your colleagues if they face any such situation like this.
  • Don’t leave food items on your table, always throw them in the bin to develop the healthy environment.
  • Report to management in case of any potential hazard

All the above points that I communicated to employees are the crux of my personal experience in an organization. I utilized my knowledge and gave guidelines to my staff for developing effective workplace ethics at a workplace. Abidance of these laws and ethics is an essential pillar for personal and organizational growth.
