The kind of Training Nursing Students Should Receive

As the healthcare system in the United States adopts more and more modern technologies, particularly Electronic Health Records (EHRs), many nursing schools should incorporate HER into their lesson plan (Allen & Seaman, 2015). The use of EHRs is increasing in the healthcare system, counting on them for everything from population management to patient charting. Therefore, nursing schools should be eager to train their students on new technologies that are essential in the delivery of patient care.

The adoption of EHRs is a government incentive for healthcare professionals to demonstrate that they are putting nursing informatics into meaningful use. Nursing students should receive a broad range of training on computer systems used at clinical sites. For instance, nursing students should be trained on SimChart, which is modeled software after actual EHRs used in medical offices and hospitals. The software translates course content into practical and everyday tasks that students encounter in the workplace. SimChart allows nursing students to practice patient analysis, monitoring, and documentation of healthcare information (DeVore, 2015). At the end of the training, there should be an exam to evaluate student’s understanding of computer systems.

Post 2: Self-Assessment

The TANIC self-assessment was an eye-opening experience for me because it helped me to know how far I can go to become a computer-savvy informatics nurse. It is important to integrate nursing informatics across the nursing curricula. Learning new nursing informatics skills places competent graduates in a technology-laden healthcare environment (Wasserman, 2016). Over the years, it has been argued that online educational programs deprive students of tutor interactions and do not ascertain that students are able to practice what they learn from the Internet (Allen & Seaman, 2015). However, learning nursing informatics online is an added advantage as one must first become computer savvy before he or she bridges the clinical gaps with patient interactions. The TANIC self-assessment creates awareness of the shortcomings along with the individual’s strengths and weaknesses. Creating this awareness, the TANIC self-assessment forms opportunities to correct this imperfection.
