The First American Poet Anne Bradstreet And Her Inspiration

Bradstreet, Anne. The Works of Anne Bradstreet. Harvard University Press, 1981

Bradstreet’s poetics are the works of the Elizabethan literary tradition. The works also incorporate Edmund Spenser as well as Sir Philip Sidney. The sixteenth-century French poet, as well as religion, played a major role in influencing her to engage in the works.

At last, the compacted England in her youth was Receding”(913). She wrote her view on the roles of Puritan women, their morality, and faith. Anne’s Purpose Anne lived and wrote during the 1600’s. These times were known as the Puritan times; she was born around 1612 and died around 1672.

Anne began writing scholarly poems at an early age. This came from the motivation offered by the father. Anne Bradstreet died of Tuberculosis. The Tenth Muse Lately, her poetry was named in America as her new volume of poetry. Anne became the first poet in America and was considered to be reluctant to settle in America after relocating from England. Her reluctance was related to the love that she had for her original country, England.

But before Anne died, she lived her life exceptionally. She lived at a time when the female gender was taken for weakness, and many comfortably accepted the role. Anne paved the way for a better future for the Puritan women. She used her poems to call for fair treatment of all the women of her time. Being female would not prevent her from taking up the role of writing. She, however, acted as a Puritan woman and manipulated her role to attain her goals.

She used her ability to write to fight for the rights of women across the land. On the other hand, Puritan times presented women as being more evil than men. She manipulated her ability to prove otherwise. She pointed out the evils of religion and supported the inducement of fair treatment of women in religion. Her morality stands out among all the people of her time. She remained focused and disciplined about life and was only guided by her goals. Courage is portrayed when the English heroine crosses to America and becomes the first poet. A woman made history.
