The Birth-Mark by Nathaniel Hawthorne Essay

In the story by Nathaniel Hawthorne gives the analysis of Aylmer who was is suggested to be the very skillful scientists having experience on spiritual well being. The story gives an analysis of the way he carried his duties from one perspective to another. In an occasion, he had left his laboratory work for the caring of his assistant (Hawthorne, 2). In this certain occasion, he washed hand from chemical and asks the beautiful woman, Georgiana to be his wife. There were very miraculous discoveries those days from which the discovery of electricity marked much of the surprises by then. It was just very uncommon for the love of any given scientists to be in the completion of the love of the woman but in this case, it happened. His love with the young woman could only be strong if they could all love science as it was his strong bound. In those days such kind of marriage and love took place for the purpose. One day, after they got marriage Aylmer saw his wife be in trouble. “Georgiana’’ He said, “Have you ever considered that the mark upon your cheek might be removed”? “No,” she said smiling. But seeing the seriousness of his question, she said, “The mark has so often been called a charm that I was simple enough to imagine it might be so.” “Shocks you!” cried Georgiana, deeply hurt (Hawthorne, 5). Her face reddened and she burst into tears. “Then why did you marry me? You cannot love what shocks you!”

There was a birthmark in the left cheek of his wife, Georgiana which was deeply in her skin. The mark was by birth and it was very red in colour. In the process Georgiana blushing there was less visibility of her birth-mark but after turning pale the mark was highly visible. Based on the emotions in her heart, the mark could be either seen or just not seen. In was shaped like just a small kind human being hand. Those who fall in love with her at first assumed that the hand mark on her cheek was because she touched her cheek when she was born and it was the magical fairy. In this case, the man of the lovers are said to have made their life at risk by kissing the birth-mark in her cheek. In this case, some other people had the different opinion about the birthmark. Some of the people said that the mark destroyed the beauty of Georgiana face (Usedom & Elizabeth 1173). The lovers and men who were observers and did not like the mark wished it could be washed away so that they are not able to see it on her cheek anyway. After their marriage, Aylmer got a discovery it was all about his case. He found her to be beautiful by the mark in consideration f how perfect she was and therefore the mark had become so unbearable. In this case, Aylmer considered the mark in his wife’s cheek to be the symbol of determination when she is sad or sick. With time the mark caused a lot of pain to him as that beauty so far had not given the pleasure to him. In the time when they should be in their happiest point, Aylmer thought on how he could get away with the mark from his wife. Georgiana became fearing her look. “Do you remember, dear Aylmer, about the dream you had last night about this hateful mark?” she asked with a weak smile. “None! None whatever!” answered Aylmer, surprised (Hawthorne, 7).

It was from then that Georgiana cooperated in making sure being married by scientists the mark could be removed. They all went to the Aylmer laboratory through which he made all efforts to make sure that he removes the mark from his wife. Successfully in an application of his scientific skills, he had the mark removed from his wife’s cheek by chemical application and this marked the death of her wife since after the mark disappeared from her cheek she died since the mark had linked her life (Hawthorne, 19).
