The Allegory of the Cave Plato

In the Allegory of the Cave Plato stated that a group of prisoners was chained up in a cave since birth with their backs to the entrance unable to move their heads and no knowledge of the outside world. However different objects were passing through the entrance of the cave cast shadows on the wall. The prisoners believed that the shadow casts on the wall are real. Then one day one of the prisoners was free, and he went to the outside world he come to know that what he perceives in the cave was not real and those were a just reflection of different objects. The prisoners went back to the cave to inform the other that what they see is not true and there are a real world and real objects outside of the cave, but they rejected him and believed in the things there were observing.

Plato has explicitly described the intellectual and psychological imprisonment of the human being. People believe in that what is shown to them or what is just in front of them they do not want to investigate what other possibilities could be there. Just like the prisoners saw the shadows on the wall and believed them as true objects. The contemporary society is just like that cave where all the people are imprisoned and believe in those object which is shown to them. They did not go deep in the reality of the object because the current society is imprisoned. The people did not use their wisdom and knowledge to find out what could be the reality behind these objects.

In current society, people are more likely to believe in those objects or news which is in their interest. They do not go in the rationality of news because the fake things are more appealing them if they would go in its true meaning it will hurt them like the prisoner who comes out from the cave and could not see the real objects. Because he comes out from a dark place, his eyes were not exposed to light before. Some happen with human beings they live in the dark and when they come out from that dark place means to reality it hurts them. They could not see the real objects.

Their mind does not accept the rationality behind the objects because it is not in their interest. The people have intellectually and psychologically imprisoned themselves to the unreal world because that is more appealing and they like it. People live in their own illusionary and imaginary world. They did not want to come out from that imaginary world because that would be painful for them. If they are dragged forcibly to the real world, they would be overwhelmed by the intensity of the reality, and they won’t be able to look a single object of the reality just like the person who come out from the dark cave and could not see anything which was told his that it is real.

The allegory of the cave has explained the philosophy of life and how people spend their life. Philosophers have tried to find out the meaning of life and many other things the allegory of the cave was an attempted of Plato to tell people what life means. For him, life is like a cave, and people are imprisoned in that cave, and they only see what they are allowed to see. “The allegory is offered not as a conclusive proof but as a suggestive possibility” (Soccio). The search for knowledge and use of wisdom can help one in freeing themselves from the cave.
