Self-Reflection Letter

I am writing to tell you a good news and that is I have changed. I know you will be happy to hear it as you used to have endless thoughts, debates and struggle about it. I am writing to tell you and show you that I have improved my writing abilities, which I did not have before taking English 102. This class is helping me every day in improving my writing abilities and I see positive change in me. I know you always wished to be able to write well but you struggled with it all the time but the good news is I am learning every day and improving my writing. I have learned many techniques from my last assignment. It was a synthesis essay focusing on the problems of students in college. While writing the assignment I learned to revise, proofread, cite, argue and create a thesis statement. Although I knew these techniques could help me in improving my writing, it was difficult to be persistent in doing it.

As the assignment was on the challenges of the college students, it was relevant to my own experiences as a student. I learned during the assignment that the students were to be blamed for their failure because of their carelessness. The assignment made me uncomfortable as it blamed me but it was helpful because it developed a sense of responsibility in me. I felt throughout that you are responsible for your grade, not the writing. It helped to confront my laziness and myself. I genuinely tried to improve my grade with responsibility taking interest in the process of writing instead of considering it a problem.

Although I knew about writing, I never took them seriously and practiced them. However, the assignment was helpful in keeping me on track so that I could revise, and proofread. I was told many times, as you already know that I should revise and proofread my papers. I never did it but this assignment. I did revise my arguments, sources and sentence structure taking help from the peers. It was tiring but I learned in the process. I learned that I have weak sentence structure. I learned about the run on sentences and spelling mistakes that I make. Therefore, I now know I must revise and proofread my paper before submitting otherwise, I make several mistakes in the paper but I am happy that I was able to see the problems. I realized I can improve my writing as I know the pattern of my mistakes.

Secondly, doing the synthesis essay helped me in understanding proper citing techniques and writing thesis statements. Earlier I did not cite most of my resources but I now know that it is crucial to cite everything properly. As it is a crime and theft to use other people’s work without crediting them. In addition, I am learning to have a strong thesis for all the papers because it is the core of all the papers. Without the thesis, a paper can be confusing and vague. Therefore, I have learned and I am learning to write a strong thesis at the end of the introductory paragraph explaining the discussions of the paper succinctly.

Therefore, my last synthesis essay helped me understand the significance of proper citation, thesis statement, revising and proofreading. Although I knew about them, I had not realized that they were crucial for any writing. Consequently, the assignment was very useful. It helped me understand my weaknesses and mistakes that I make in the papers such as sentence structures, spelling and lack of proper citation and proper thesis. I also realized my strengths that I can write well if I paid attention and I was not bad at writing. Hence, it was an enriching experience and I wanted to share it with you as you always wished to have improved writing. I learned it depended on me and I regret not starting it sooner but never is too late to start. And I have started it.

Sincerely,

Your Future
