REACTION PAPER

  1. How does the reading/study address the question of language and academic achievement of second language learners?

The reading from the study, identifies that there is a different between social and academic language. The academic language matching with the social language, used by the students can have a positive influence on the second language learners. However, if a student speaks Spanish as the first language, and English as an second language, might have problem in achieving academic success. This is due to the factor that, social language is different from the academic language, and when a student is introduced to ELL for studies, it makes it more difficult for the learning environment if it is using English as a Second Language (ESL).

  1. What are the implications of the study for second language learners, educators of second language learners and the school community?

Implications of seconf language learners relate to the proficiency in the language undertaken. It involves listening, reading, writing, and speaking the academic language to make it proficient and become efficient in it. For the students, it is important to have appropriate skills in the second language, where reading, writing, speaking, and listening should be addressed properly. Lack of any one of the aspects might make the learning learning difficult. For educators and social community, it is important to develop environment which is effective learning for the students, and create patterns of learning which are essential in providing effective education.

  1. As an educator, what is your reaction to the article/study? Do you make any connections? Do you agree or disagree? Why or why not? What questions remain unanswered?

Looking from an educator’s perspective, the article enlists important issues which a student cannot differentiate between a second and learning language. The article tells about the factors which can make a positive connection if the second language learners manage their social language in to the academic language for more effective learning. It can help improve the educational background for the learners and the institutions. Keeping ELL in mind, the effects of using second language on academic achievement still remains unanswered.
