Police Brutality and Criminal Justice

Reasons for Using Secondary Data

This research will use secondary data to test the hypothesis. There are several reasons as to why secondary data would be preferred over the primary sources of data. First, secondary data is more informative in comparison to primary data, considering that secondary data consists of works written after an ample period of research which includes interviewing multiple parties as well as witnessing live events of police brutality and analysis by different experts (health, 2015). The data also allows for the systematic and elegant organization of the research paper, considering that it is recorded over a long period of time, making it possible to assess the evolution of police brutality over the past several years, which provides sufficient information to test the hypothesis of the research. The data contains a comprehensive analysis of both the behavioral characteristics of the police officers as well as those of the common citizens, giving a clear insight into why such trends as police brutality exist in criminal justice. Such information would be more difficult to find in primary sources for reasons including but not limited to difficulty in asking the right questions and the interviewees not being able to provide comprehensive information about the topic (Lopez, 2013). Lastly, considering that the research intends to look at police brutality including from a global perspective, it would be impossible to gather primary information from such a wide geographical area considering the limits in time as well as money.

Sources of Secondary Data

The research will make use of books which focus on the discrepancies found in the criminal justice system, paying attention only to police brutality. The paper will also make use of articles and journals published over the years, in an attempt to get sufficient information about the culture of police brutality. The research will look into written cases of police brutality in an attempt to compare the circumstances as well as the extremity of the force used by the police forces all across the world. In addition, the research will collect data from reliable documentaries available on the internet. The paper will also look at recent cases of police brutality from different regions of the world.

How the Data will be used to test the Research Hypothesis

The information collected will include events of police brutality, analyses of the behavior of police officers when dealing with security situations, brief information on how the police officers are trained to handle citizens, the ethical conduct of police officers when handling crime suspects, and the behavior of crime suspects as well as common citizens when they encounter the police force. This will be used to look at how people react when interacting with police officers in different situations, and consequently clarify whether sometimes the people drive the police officers into handling them with deleterious animosity (Roufa, 2017). Analysis of the training which police officers undergo will tell whether it has anything to do with how they interact with people, and whether their way of engaging people incites them into responding or reacting provocatively. Analysis of the ethical conduct of the officers will show whether it is the forces with more problems, the common people or whether the problem is at equilibrium between the police force and the common people (Roufa, 2017).
