Netiquette in Professional Electronic Communication

Communicating electronically can reflect negatively or positively on the writer, depending on how their content is perceived by the reader. Avoiding mistakes through adherence to netiquette rules is vital as it leads to professional results while also helping one avoid embarrassing situations (Kozík & Slivová, 2014). Netiquette can be defined as Internet etiquette, and entails the use and adherence of good manners when communicating online. The importance of using netiquette is grounded on the fact that online communication is non-verbal. As such, online communication does not allow the parties involved to hear intonation, see body language or facial expression. Using netiquette thus makes online communication clearer. What is more, the use of netiquette is critical to business and career related electronic communication as it projects professionalism (Kozík & Slivová, 2014). Besides, netiquette serves to explain an emotion, particularly by using emoticons. Overall, adhering to netiquette helps one establish and maintain positive online relationships while also developing positive online reputation.

Failure to use netiquette in your electronic communication can have numerous repercussions, particularly to the writer. To begin with, it can breed toxic worry by propagating miscommunication since some audience may fail to interpret the message being conveyed. Moreover, failing to use netiquette can lead to embarrassing situations (Park, Na, & Kim, 2014). For instance, inappropriate netiquette may compel other internet users to confer with one another and possibly alienate the individual deemed offensive or call them out, causing an embarrassing situation. Lastly, as Park, Na, & Kim (2014) contend, failure to use netiquette in online communication can negatively affect the credibility of the content of our message. The reason is that with lack of netiquette, it would be difficult to convince your audience that your message is valid, legitimate, or worthwhile to read. Using good netiquette techniques is hence critical to online communication as it minimizes embarrassing moments and enhances professionalism.
