Maintaining and Enhancing Self-Esteem Essay
Introduction
Our cognition towards ourselves plays a role in establishing the views in which we perceive our worth. The self-concept or in other towards sense self is determined towards our cognition. The self is divided between two stages by ourselves. The one is actual and the other is real self, these two plays its part building the self-esteem. It had two significant aspects the low esteem and high esteem, the psychology prefers to take it in the balanced term will lead to the feeling of content in one’s life rather the human being will lost either positivity or the value of others. The gap between these two provided the tendency of variation of low or high self-esteem. The social psychology describes, guides and maintains the stability of self-esteem (Sedikides, Hoorens and Dufner, 2015).
Description
When we believe that we are good and have the worth which usually is given by other leads the positivity inside us. The low self-esteem brings negativity when we started to compare ourselves with others in form of our abilities to be or to something. There are several aspects through which we can determine the importance and definition of self-esteem. It works by those aspects and those aspects are appearance and performance when comparing to others, the other aspect which is significant is our relationship with other people. Psychologist consider this important and crucial due to the involvement of other people. The relationship with people if good then the positivity gives us the high self-esteem and when it’s otherwise I will affect us negatively. There could be several other reasons of not have the one or two goof relationship but human nature starts undermining his/her own abilities. Self-esteem is depends on the time and with passing time it becomes stable. On the other hand, self-esteem also depends on the day to day activity or even hour to hour differences. For instance, if succeeded in one task it will give us the feeling of high self-esteem but in the next hour the second task didn’t go as planned leads to low self-esteem. To always stay positive or try to engage ourselves in continuous effort will provide the amount of self-esteem which can stable the positive energy (Freeman et al., 2014).
There are two suggested tools through which we can measure the self-esteem, those are implicit and explicit. The findings of both the measures suggest that human often see themselves in positivity. Both the measures have some questions which gives the points in order to understand the level of positivity. Researchers suggests that the main things which plays part in the high or low self-esteem is how one prefers to portrays themselves in front of others. The country like United Sates of America got the high number of self-esteem points and the reason is the culture. The cultural variable impacts on this because of American culture individualistic culture. If we compare to this culture with those countries like developing in Asian region the level of self-esteem is low because they prefer to portray themselves positive and good among others in order to get the approval of others (Falk and Heine, 2015).
The other aspect which influences the self-esteem is gender because study shows that women shows less points in self-esteem but this difference is minor and found in those counties where the law is not provide gender equality. The participation in the work place is low in the working places and offices also influences the self-esteem. The one other aspect is age, this aspects goes from low in the childhood and then goes higher during the adult age which gradually lower down when they reaches to old age(Bajaj, Robins and Pande, 2016).
Enhancing and maintain the self-esteem is quite important. As the aspects which influences the self-esteem from cultural to gender and then the ager factor. The tendency of self-esteem needs to be looked after even in both of the ways. Higher then it should will also leave negative influence and lower ten it should leave one in the state of negativity and undermining own worth. The debate among researchers are about the importance of self-esteem regardless of any aspect which influences it. Because every culture around the world emphasize on the improvement of it because not just the mental health but it also influences the career, relationship and even the physical health of any human being. To look deeply on the reasons behind the level of self-esteem and understanding can lead us to maintain it. The good grades in the class, good day at job and finding someone to love always boosts the self-esteem. On the other hand, whenever we face failure, the best way is to look for other things and indulging oneself to activities will influences the self-esteem. When there are number activities it will help building up the energy to face the failure at on domain because other activities contributes in the positivity which boost the self-esteem (Neff, 2016).
The other most effecting and influencing way to maintain the self-esteem is building the relationship with other people. As mentioned earlier, when other people get involves it becomes important. The people around help in building the positivity through their circle. The technology have grown and given the access to social websites which helps in building the positive relationship which are constructive for the self-esteem in those who try to engage themselves.
When it comes to maintaining, the high level of self-esteem also harmful for the personality. The unrealistic and considering to have something which is undeserved considered to be narcissism. The term Narcissism is the alternative of high self-esteem which refers to give oneself enough value which undermines other people around. It also refers as self-centered and self-admiration. The negative impact of high self-esteem can badly affect the relationship and hurt people around. This aspect of personality affects the constructive habits and lack of tolerance towards the criticism. People with high self-esteem thinks everything is about them and they lost the consideration for other people. It leaves them in a state of unrealistic and they cannot see the clear realistic picture (Meléndez et al, 2015).
Conclusion
The self-esteem have the power which leave the song impact in both ways positively and negatively, so we shouldn’t undermining its importance. The realistic approach should be the balance in self-esteem rather falling to either sides. The caution and suggestion should be made to people that people should look for self-enhancement and build themselves with hard work which will ultimately help in building the self-esteem in a fair amount. Which will not only in the career, education but also among the social gathering.
