Abortion law and US politics

Thesis statement

The increased restrictions the US government is posing on the abortion right of the citizens is causing agitation among the general public, the legislative authorities need to vocalize public concerns in this regard.

Introduction

The United States is posing many restrictions on abortion access, and the increased interference with the citizens’ reproductive rights and decisions is earning significant backlash. According to the general stance public, the decision should primarily be of the family with their primary healthcare provider’s consultation. Still, in recent years, the government is posing severe restrictions.

For instance, the Hyde amendment restricts Medicaid to sponsor abortion financially, though the insurance provides medical coverage for other medical procedures. Thus, abortion-related restrictions are growing as a severe concern for low-income citizens.

The following paper will discuss current US law regarding abortion, the problems the general public faces, and the proposed solution.

The government’s increasing interference in the abortion restriction is hurting the emotions of citizens and putting a financial strain on low-income citizens.

Political problem

Abortion has been the center of the debate on various American political platforms for about half the century; the neighboring democrat’s US and Canada have long sought their perspective regarding abortion. However, there has always been a bone of contention between the court, democrats, and republicans.

Looking back to 1973, the Supreme Court of the United States has taken into account the appeals of the women and, with nominal restrictions, considered abortion as the health right of the individual, though the court has been a strong independent figure in the American political system, the decentralized political system rose various concerns and contradictory opinions on the subject matter. The Democrats have always been in favor of abortion rights, while the Republicans have always opposed the idea. Whereas presidential and senate members always take advantage of the heated debate and try to entice the voters to have the same school of thought on the matter.

As soon as the US government cut down the financial coverage of abortion from healthcare insurance, the issue grew a particular concern for the state’s low-income class. Moreover, a more significant percentage of the other social classes also consider the restrictions as an infringement of public privacy and decision-making. Gallup records show that the general American public backs the government ban on abortion in the third trimester. However, the bill passed in Lowa, which bans abortion if the fetal heartbeat is detectable, has sparked general public resistance.

Now looking at the possible solution that can set the debate:

Political Solution:

This year has kept on hold various anti-abortion laws in the state courts, though the public procession and the non-governmental organization contributions have been observed to be limited due to the current COVID-19 situation, yet the states like Virginia and Washington DC have achieved a promising milestone and uplift various bans from the abortion laws. Yet, the Republicans are still of the same stance; this signifies that the federal government is now entitled to set the debate once and for all by providing meaningful and equally accessible abortion rights to the general public.

Along with the independent medical healthcare setup, the supreme court should strive to keep issues intact from the politics and decentralized system. Thus policies should be made and implemented, which should be more public interest-oriented.

The general public opinion, their socio-economic concern, the rate of rape and incision pregnancies, and the risk factors associated with or without abortion should be vigilantly analyzed. Then policies should be made by the court.

Alternate approach:

Keeping in view the US’s political situation over the past 50 years, the confidence of the public in the Supreme Court regarding the safeguarding of their reproductive rights is deteriorating. Unfortunately, the hopes are not so high; both schools of thought happen to see across the country, so there should be a vigilant mean way to tackle the issue.

Therefore the state’s governments should launch awareness to reduce the unintended pregnancy rates; this is the only way to lower half of the incidences of abortion.

Comprehensive education regarding family planning and sexuality can help in this regard. Moreover, curbing domestic violence and sexual abuse across the country can reduce the unintended pregnancy rate.

Though various solutions are recommended to pass the bills regarding women’s rights, in my opinion, using the available resources to solve the at-hand problems is the only way out of it. Even a single state can use public health awareness funds to uproot the issue by implementing the awareness plan and can be a role model for others without indulging in the political debate.

Conclusion

The increased restriction on abortion laws is posing a serious issue regarding women’s health and public privacy.

The Supreme court should try to keep the matter non-political and in public interest as much as possible. The state government should help in reducing unintended pregnancy cases.

Detailed census on the general public opinion, health, socio-economic factors, the willingness, and resource provision to raise the special children should be considered before passing legislation.
