Food Inequality And The Role Of Private Sectors

As the population of the earth grows day by day, the natural resources are becoming thin. The effects of overpopulation can be seen as the inequality of food, which is apparent in third-world countries, where starvation is, unfortunately, becoming a norm. Not having access to food is a violation of basic human rights; however, human greed is one of the reasons that is coming in the way of solving food inequality. Hoarding unnecessarily large amounts of food and then wasting it has become second nature for humans. It is estimated that almost 17 per cent of food is wasted around the world without remorse. Then, there is also the political inequality in food trade that prevents countries from trading on fairgrounds. Fortunately, efforts are being made to reduce food inequality, and the private sector of each country can help provide their help (D’Odorico et al., 2019).

The first step that local governments can take is redesigning the food system so that supply efficiency can be achieved. Departments like agriculture, trade, and health should be included in this redesign so that they can help develop a more sustainable system (Nwuneli, 2020). Working towards the affordability and availability of food should be the main focus of the private sector, and they should invest it accordingly. Nutritious and organic foods are more expensive than other foods; going for a greener approach, like minimizing carbon emissions during processing, transport, and packaging, should be considered to reduce the prices of nutritious food. The waste of food should be reprimanded, and this is being done in South Korea, where people are fined for the food they waste. This has led to reduced food wastage in South Korea. If private sectors do their part in providing food security, then we will be a step closer to reducing food inequality (Stiftung, 2017).
