Precious movie analysis

When Precious film, which is based on the novel Push by Sapphire, was released in 2009, audiences were amazed for various reasons. The themes such as racism, poverty, and struggle for education contributed to the reaction of the audience. However these themes would not be that powerful if it was not for the convincing and strong acting of Mo’Nique and Gabourey Sidibe.

The acting was the most outstanding in the final scene. The themes were also well demonstrated in the final scene. In the final scene, Mama (Mo’Nique) is made to explain the abuse that Precious (Gabourey Sidibe) has gone through. This is among the few scenes in the movie in which Mama dominates. Mama opens up to precious and the social worker about how precious started being abused in an emotional story telling. This happens to be the only time that Mama is seen in a weaker position than other characters. Normally, in other scenes, she is seen as dominant and powerful to Precious and everyone else that she gets to interact with. But in this scene, she is so terrified when it dawns on her that she will have to live without Precious (Sapphire, 2009). In the last scene, the audience feels undeserved sympathy for Mama because she portrays a powerful emotional performance. The camera is seen tilting, zooming in and out, and panning like it is hand-held, therefore making the scene look real. The zooming in and out of the camera demonstrates the tension in the scene, which is getting tighter and tighter, therefore making the audience more sympathetic to Mama. The final scene is the most powerful emotional moment since we see Mama trying to persuade both the social worker and the audience through her presentation and emotional argument, though she is unable to win the logical front. This scene is the most troubling and memorable in the film (Sapphire,2009).
