Sleepy

Sleepy is a short story that was published in 1888 by Anton Chekhov. It was published in Peterburgskaya Gazeta’s No. 24 in January 1888. It was then a part of Adolf Marks, a collection of all of the stories by Anton Chekhov. This story represents the story of thirteen years old Varka who was hired as a nanny for a baby boy. She has to do all the home chores and look after the baby the whole night without sleeping. She had the fear that she would fall asleep and her master and his misses would beat her (Glotova 2445-2454).

The Yellow Wallpaper

The Yellow Wallpaper is also a short story comprising almost six thousand words. It was written by American writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman in the year 1892 January. It was published in the New England magazine. This story revolves around a young female who has moved with her family to a farmhouse away from her home as she was suffering from some sort of depression. Her husband, thinking of her rest, gives her a room on the top floor, which is a nursery. The woman, being isolated most of the time, feels attracted to the yellow wallpaper in her room.

The setting and its importance

Setting is the part of any story that tells the surroundings, circumstances, and situation in which a story takes place. It sketches the situation in the reader’s mind, organizing the concepts and information cognitively. The setting also imposes its effects on the characters (Jones and Song 447-476).

The setting of Sleepy is a girl who is up late in the night. She is working in a house of three people: her master, his mistress, and his new-born son.

The role of the setting

Both the stories have their own setting. In sleep, the young teenagers were working as a housemaid and a nanny for a family and their young children. She was considered a slave and had been facing the brutal behavior of her masters.

The setting in this story has shown the tiredness with which Varka used to go through. This caused constant exhaustion in her. This not only caused her physical exhaustion but also mental exhaustion. She wanted to rest but she couldn’t. This setting provoked her, and she was forced to commit a crime.

In the yellow wallpaper, the young lady had been suffering from postpartum depression, which is one of the causes of depression among women after their deliveries.

The connection between the setting and the situation faced by the character

She belongs to a very poor family. Her father has died. She used to do all the work in the house as a maid, whether it was cleaning, cooking, serving, or looking after the baby. She was under a lot of work the whole day. She used to get tired by doing each and every chore of the house. Her master and his misses were cruel and would not let Varka rest for a single while. They used to keep on harassing her. They even used to beat her. At night, when everyone used to go to sleep, she was not even allowed to sleep. She was forced to look after the baby in the night so that the baby would not make any noise and sleep. Varka was also afraid that if she fell asleep, her master would beat her. She had been beaten many times for sleeping in the night. This caused her exhaustion. She was unable to think of her own. With her half-opened eyes, she used to see her parents. She used to see her father dying and her mother pleading. She also used to see some mud and constant screaming, which she could not recognize. These nightmares were all because of the exhaustion she was facing in her real life. The exhaustion had gotten her into psychosis. The screaming she used to hear in her dream caused her to kill the baby as she was considering the baby as her enemy. After killing the baby, she was able to sleep. All the exhaustion became a nightmare for Varka. This caused her to become a patient with psychosis and held her from committing a crime.

The women of that time were not taken into consideration, and their sufferings were not taken into consideration. As per the physician, the woman was kept in isolation in a room on the top floor. It is quite food and air. was ensured that she gets adequate rest and adequate sleep, but the condition of the top floor was not good. It was wrecked. The floor was broken, and the wallpaper was torn. In the midst of all these dull surroundings, the character found a very attractive thing. That attractive thing was the yellow wallpaper. As she thought of being neglected, she confined her thinking to that yellow wallpaper. She used to appreciate its dressing
