Artificial Intelligence In Education

For many years, the authors of science, futurists, and movie makers have predicted a lot of wonderful changes that would arise from the widespread use of artificial intelligence. It is a branch of computer science that is concerned with the creation of intelligent machines. Therefore, AI intelligence is demonstrated by machines and not human beings or animals. To the present, artificial intelligence has not shown its crazy wave of development as illustrated by the previous predictions; however, in different ways, it has become ubiquitously part of the numerous aspects that relate to the lives of human beings.

Beginning with intelligence sensors that assist a person in taking a perfect picture and images, to the automatic parking features that are found in the car, to the frustrating personal helpers in the Smartphone, AI is an intelligence that is all around us at any moment of time. Despite the fact that we haven’t created self-aware robots like those found in popular movies like “Star Wars” and “A Space Odyssey,” there is the significant advancement of AI technologies in a wider range of applications like health, entertainment, security, education, and many more. Based on education, how is AI shaping the future of education? Therefore, in this paper, we are going to illustrate the application of Artificial intelligence in Education.

In a comparison of the learning criteria in the 21st century with that found in the early 1900s, the variations are not that obvious. The teachers would be standing in front of the classrooms sharing notes and giving instructions to the students. The students will be sitting at desks in a class or watching online video conference software, but there are technological advancements. Most of the learning tools and processes have been digitized and automated to overcome the geographical barrier. The teachers are no longer shouldering the burden of training young generations or even the workforce in corporations. AI systems are assisting to enhance education through the collection, analysis, and correlation of any interaction in both virtual and physical classrooms.

AI systems have become essential in the measurement of learning progress. The instructors are required to take into account every reaction in the lecture, each attentive and blank stare, assignment turned in late or early, every hesitant or even eager response to the question and many other assessments that are required by the students to grasp the concept. This creates a greater challenge for the teachers to accomplish without using AI systems. “However, machine learning algorithms, which are based on analyzing and finding patterns and correlations between data points, are proving to be an effective tool in helping teachers quantify a student’s understanding of a lecture” (Dickson 106). Through analysis of particular student’s data, AI possesses the potential to illustrate areas in which the student needs assistance, thus improving the achievement of the student and the teacher’s support.

AI systems can also be used to find and address gaps in learning. The AI system’s data can automatically be used by the intelligent system to engage students in the learning experience with the aim of addressing the gaps or assisting an instructor in identifying and then responding to the areas that are required. The machine can also “power intelligent tutoring systems (ITS)”, which can function in conjunction with the human instructor or self-paced learning environment. It uses the history of the student and the real-time data to offer a personalized content that is tuned to the student’s specific weaknesses and strength. Therefore it will assist in building a personalized, efficient and contextualized support to the student hence making it easier to maximize the learning environment and also teaching schedules. It’s also believed that by 2025, ride-sharing fleets and autonomous vehicles will be responsible for the transportation of students to different learning institutions (techlearning.com 8).

The other way in which artificial intelligence is shaping education concerns the library sector, which is an important research sector for students in learning institutions. The best example is a Library robot that should be introduced at Welsh University. Aberystwyth University in the United Kingdom aims to come up with a new method of consulting the catalogue where the students are required to speak to the robot, and it leads them to the title they are looking for instead of consulting the librarian for reference or typing the request. The robot was designed to listen to the spoken words of the students, apply artificial intelligence to the library catalogue, and then guide the students to the specific title they were requesting. “Hugh (library robot) is useful for automating or simplifying tedious and mundane tasks. Things that both staff and users don’t want to spend time on” (Chant 7).

However, I may conclude by asking this question: “Will AI replace teachers?” The reality is that the education sector has been impacted by Artificial intelligence both out and in the classrooms. Starting from administrative systems like the predictive analytics of students to learning and teaching systems that help in the interpretation of the students’ tasks. All these tools aim to make the teacher more effective. Nevertheless “is that how it will continue to be always?” the answer to these questions will rely mostly on the technological capabilities and policies of the education sector. Therefore, the way things get going the results will be upheld in education like in the other aspects of the people lives.
