A dystopian book called Fahrenheit 451 was initially published in 1953. The story is set in a future where reading has been outlawed and everything is being burned. Guy Montag, a fireman in his town, serves as the book’s main character. “I don’t want to switch sides and merely follow orders. If I do that, there’s no need to change” (88). Montag has been a firefighter for 9 years and hasn’t encountered anything he thinks is worthwhile reading.
Lessons worth learning can be found in books. “The magic is only in the books,” the author claimed, “in the way they sewed the pieces of the universe into one garment for us.” (79). This line demonstrates how our World is largely the product of our imagination.
“If you read quickly and thoroughly, perhaps some sand will remain in the sieve” (74). This demonstrates the strength of the imagination. It is something you want to continue developing and something you need to work on. The imagination is a useful instrument for filling the mind, which needs to be done regularly.
Ray Bradbury takes advantage of the environment to evoke a feeling of being there. “Don’t look at a book too closely” (148). This demonstrates the story’s gloomy, melancholy tone. It also claims that there is no beauty or safety in the World. All of these items are gone. The primary character, Montag, has made numerous calls but hasn’t connected with anyone. He believed that all of the novels about fictional worlds were complete fabrications.
“It doesn’t matter what you do…so long as you change something from the way it was before you touched it into something that’s like you after you take your hands away” (150). People get the impression that books are unnecessary and can be substituted by other things. What important is how they alter one’s perspective on life. One can view life in a different light after reading a good book that has to be replaced or taken away from their lives.
