What is Emotional Intelligence

According to the studies Psychology, Emotional Intelligence is a person’s capacity to question the emotions and the emotional information contained within these emotions. Psychological studies suggest that people who have higher emotional intelligence are better at quickly and accurately finding a solution to emotional-related problems. Such individuals can also better interpret the emotions on other people’s faces. These gifted people also have the ability to effectively utilize their emotional episodes in order to promote certain types of thinking. For example, they are well aware that when people are sad, they are better able to analyze the situations around them and they may also alter their thought processes accordingly.

People with higher EI also better understand the meaning behind every emotion. They appreciate that they should not expose themselves to angry people since they are dangerous and that happy people are more open to joining others and that sad person may prefer some time by themselves. Such people, with higher EI, are in better control of their emotions. They very well realize that happy people are more prone to accept invitations to social events as compared to those who are sad.

According to some journalistic accounts, EI is often considered the same as some other personality traits. Very often, EI is equated with agreeableness, optimism, happiness, calmness, and motivation. All these are the personal traits of a persona and have nothing to do with emotions or intelligence. These are definitely not even close to emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is the ability to interpret emotions and not just the state of being in an emotion.

Development of Emotional Intelligence

The basis for emotional intelligence is established in early life. It is then reinforced over the course of time. Divided into four levels, there are twelve components of emotional intelligence. The below table can elaborate on the grouping of key components.

Self-Awareness Self-Management Social Awareness Relationship Management
Emotional self-awareness Emotional Self Control Empathy Influence
Adaptability Coach and Mentor
Achievement orientation Organizational Awareness Conflict Management
Positive Outlook Team Work
Inspirational Leadership

Emotional intelligence is hard to develop as it is connected to the development of psychological abilities and the neurological pathways which are developed over the course of time. Changing the old habits of how we interact with other people is not an easy thing to change. The basis of self-awareness and emotional self-control are developed during early childhood and are influenced by the environment in which a person grows up. To change these fundamental components, one needs very strong motivation and compelling reason. It implies that the urge and desire to acquire more emotional intelligence originated from within the person.

To achieve it, one has to first have a clear vision of the state of emotional intelligence they want to get to. It is a dream towards which one has to work. The next step is to realize the realities of the current situation of emotional intelligence. Once realized, these may look like the ugly realities which a person may have to need to change. After it, there will be the gap analysis and an action plan may be chalked out as to which traits one has to work on. All this exercise cannot be done without the help of other people.

Role of emotional intelligence in life

Emotional intelligence is a very important ability and has a deep impact on life. The whole life of human beings revolves around interactions with other people, be it personal life, education or career.

Within personal life, one has to deal with immediate family members, cousins, friends, and distant family members. All these people have an influence on us and some of them may have deeper impacts on a person’s personality. It is vital to understand their emotions and the meaning behind them so as to avoid negative energy from them if any.

Similarly, within student life, one may have a large number of classmates, teachers, sports instructors,s and other administrative staff, with which they will be interacting. Emotional intelligence can help better interpret the emotions of teachers and learn from them. A strong ability to handle different types of classmates may save one from the malpractices of bullying which may have a devastating effect on personality.

Within the career, one may be exposed to bosses and peers. Not all of them will be well-wishers so emotional intelligence plays a great role in protecting oneself from such things. Moreover, one has to learn continuously and it is the biggest challenge in the job environment. Companies also seek to retain employees who are smart enough to control their emotions and make the best out of them.
