In the Christian community, controversy surrounds the theory of the Big Bang as Christians reject it for various reasons, including the argument “we-weren’t-there” that reflects the lack of consensus in the community. Christians also believe that a good thing cannot be resulted from an explosion. The billions of years claim of the Big Bang theory also contradicts the clear teachings of the Biblical scripture, as Christians believe that humans did not exist at the time of creation. While studying distant galaxies present in the universe, researchers look back in time because it takes time for light to travel (Thoughts on the Big Bang). Moreover, the advocates of the Big Bang typically reject the existence of God as they emphasize the idea that everything came into existence without God. These are the potential reasons why Christians and Christianity reject the theory of the Big Bang.
The cosmology of the Big Bang can be integrated into Christian theology through the strategy of dialogue between the two groups of Christians, ones who are compatible and supportive of the beliefs of Bing Bang and the ones who see the Big Bang as a challenge to their faith, to foster mutual understanding. The strategy of consonance can also emphasize the area of harmony between both groups, such as the idea that the universe reflects the power and wisdom of the Creator, God. In addition, the strategy of independence can also be adapted to maintain its distinctiveness so that both Big Bang cosmology and Christianity do not overlap.
One thing which I want the Church to know about the Big Bang theory is that it does not contradict the role of faith or the existence of God but explains the observations of the expanding universe and the abundance of elements of light. The Big Bang theory also reveals the complexity and beauty of the creation of God. The church should know that the Cosmology of the Big Bang is a well-supported scientific theory that does not deny or replace the role of God but describes the evolution of the universe and its purpose in understanding the wonders of God’s creation.
