Productivity in a workplace is enhanced by the mental and physical health of the workers. Every company works towards generating more revenue from a group of trained employees. However, to ensure maximization of profits and minimization of cost, the employers prefer to hire fewer workers and increase their daily workload. On the other hand, employees require earning money to sustain their day-to-day livelihoods. The essay argues that employees should try to balance work and healthy behaviors to maintain the workload and lead better lives.
The increased workload has significant consequences on the well-being of employees and the productivity of the company. According to Basińska-Zych and Springer (2017), most employees spend more time in a workplace than at home. Some workers operate in both night and day shift to increase income and improve living standards. Other reasons that lead to heavy workload include staff shortages caused by company layoffs, tight schedule, and unplanned company growth. Subsequent impacts include relationship breakdown between the workers and their employers, health concerns, family conflicts, workplace accidents, or employees’ burnout. Although all the issues are crucial, mental and physical health is the dominant and consistent matter that needs to be addressed.
Increased workload leads to various mental and physical health impacts. One of the major results of prolonged work without physical exercises is stress. Basińska-Zych and Springer (2017) acknowledge that work without rest or exercise causes increased stress and reduced productivity. The situation is even more detrimental when the workers are not only overworked but also have little influence on the amount of work assigned. Moreover, consistent stress leads to high blood pressure, heart problems, loss of appetite, and loss of sleep. As much as employees may enjoy health care coverage, well-being problems result in heightened cost burden on the workers and the company. Although there are many remedies to deal with the workload, physical exercise or “active rest” will help to avoid health problems.
According to Michishita et al. (2017), “active rest” provides the solution for the workload. Michishita et al. (2017), argues that practicing active rest both at the workplace and at home helps to improve mental health, personal relationships, and the physical activities of the workers. The researchers claim that the concept of active rest emphasizes on moderate exercises during breaks between work rather than lying down, playing games, or spending time on social media platforms. Active rest includes short-time programs such as warm-up, aerobics exercises, and cognitive functional training only requires a period of 10 minutes. The concept should be enrolled in firms to ensure reduced health programs in conjunction with other health promotion programs.
