Most of the time, the people who talk a lot do not have to say something that is going to add value. This quote is from Pope from the Ray Bradbury novel and is a wonderful message on how precise communication is supposed to be carried out. The context with regards to this quote needs to be kept in mind due to the fact that in the society in which the people are living, people are keen to exchange words as if they do not have much value. As a matter of fact, the act of speaking has become a bit of a mindless activity.
One of the messages that is given by the Pope is that the words and the brief of any communication have to be brief. There must be some sense of purpose with regard to the way people speak. This is a direct reference to Montag’s world, where conversations are carried out for the sake of it. Society is functioning in the manner that words are considered dangerous only in the instance when they are in the form of a written book. As a matter of fact, the words should stick to the commonly provided narrative in this society, which kills the purpose of the conversation. The main premise of the quote is that during the course of any conversation, the key thing is to make sure that the emphasis should be on the substance rather than the quantity. Beatty’s stance is that the words themselves become meaningless. There should be a coherent thought process, whatever is being said by the person at any given point in time. It is not about the number of words that are uttered by the person but the eventual substance of thought that is propagated by that person. The bearing fruit that is discussed here is objectivity under any discussion.
