Assessments are an integral part of learning evaluation of the students. The different tools used to evaluate the primary learners include:
- Phonemic Awareness
- Oral language
- Concepts of print
- Listening comprehension
- Comprehension
Phonemic Awareness
Also known as phonological awareness in which the primary listeners are able to hear then identify and finally manipulate phonemes. Phonemes are the smallest sound units that help to differentiate the meaning of words.
Oral language Assessment
The oral language assessment tool has been used as it provides the relevant strengths and weaknesses in a particular student regarding his ability to first listen and then understand the various complex structures used in English. This assessment is used because not all students have English as their first language but many come from a non-English background as well.
Concepts of Print
In this assessment, the administrator questions the students directly about the book orientation, words, letter concepts and punctuation. This is a great assessment tool as it helps the instructor get insights into the student’s mode of learning.
Listening comprehension
This is done to make sure that the students get the maximum out of the teaching lessons that they are given in a particular language and how well do they understand those lessons and deliberated the questions answers.
Comprehension
The ability of a student to comprehend a part of the reading material matters a lot. It is important to have an understanding of what you are reading and why it must be clear to the reader.
These literacy assessment tools help the instructor draft a better course material and also the instructional planner so that students from various mindsets can get the maximum out of the lessons being taught by the instructors.
Every student has a different profile of learning. This learning profile reflects the learning strengths and weaknesses of that student. Building up a learning expertise helps instructors understand better the struggles of a student in learning.
Different students always persuade the teachers to use different teaching methodologies for making the student understand the idea better. Achievement gaps can only close if teachers can use the latest teaching methodologies for students in order to make them learn better.
Successful learning can be achieved by 3 major methods;
- Translate: This helps teachers learn how students vary in their method of learning about different subjects.
- Disseminating: research based resources and information can help teachers unlock the learning potential of their students.
- Advocating: understanding the core value of science helps schools teach students better.
Evaluating a primary learner using 3 different types of informal reading assessments:

Student 2 | 1 | 1.5 | 1.5 | 2 |
Student 3 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 2 |

Explain what the data tells you and why? Also explain what are the next steps if your instructional planning?
The data states that the students being assessed do not have the proprietary skills of comprehension, oral language assessment and phonemic awareness when they were assessed for the first time. However as soon as they were exposed to the various assessments twice they were receptive to the assessment and showed improved performance upon other assessments.
The possible instructional planning steps will be to incorporate technology into the lesson plan that could help the students improve these aspects of their language learning.
Suggest a technology tool that might support this diverse literacy learner based on your assessment?
The suggest technology tool is an iPad or a normal tablet for students alongside a headphone so that they can perform various listening practices on it and also get the max conversational practices done via it.
