Spanking Essay

Children are innocent souls. They must be dealt with care, love and affection. However, this is not true in all cases. Parents believe that it is important to shape behaviour and actions of children so that they behave and act in a disciplined way. To achieve this purpose they blow, hit or spank them. Spanking these innocent souls is not the solution to achieve desired outcomes as intended by parents such as controlling their behaviours or disciplining them. Spanking leaves a deep impression on the childhood memories. Children who are spanked are fearful and lack confidence. They developed dark memories when they were hit. Spanking or a blow affect the integrity of children. They lose their confidence. Spanking not only hurts the soul of children but it also affects the psychological well-being and gives pain to children who are a victim of it, parents believe that corporal punishments are important to shape children. However, this is not true. Parents can talk and discuss with children about their issues and why are they behaving in a certain way. Spanking is a form of violent behaviour adopted by elders or most parents to control their children. Human beings believe that adopting some violent behaviour towards children is important to shape their behaviours. Spanking involves hitting children so that they obey orders of their elders or parents. Violent behaviour is a tool used by human to control others or to compel others to behave in a certain way. However, this kind of behaviour towards children not only give them physical but psychological pain too. It leaves gloomy memories about childhood, yet childhood are those days when one should have all the joys of life. Spanking is a kind of violent act that parents and elders use towards children to discipline them, yet it affects their integrity, confidence and mental well-being. Instead of bringing positive results it leaves a fearful impression on children (Bilenskv, 2006). This book presents its views about what spanking is and why it is practised. However, the book provides incomplete evidence about reasons why spanking is practised and what causes it.

Corporal punishments are defined as giving a blow to children or another to control their behaviours or their actions or to make them disciplined. Spanking is mostly used by parents to shape the behaviour of their children. There are many forms of spanking. To Hit on the face, hands, legs or buttocks include some forms of spanking. Spanking is adopted by elders to cause pain to children while avoiding any injury. Spanking adopted by children depends on the age of parents, cultural background as well as the gender of parents. Research studies show that about sixty-seven percent of the parents use spanking as a way of disciplining their children. Parents who are young at age use spanking to control the behaviour of their children more often than children of older ages. Mother use spanking more frequently than fathers. But this difference is too nominal. Parents from lower and middle class depend on spanking to shape their children. Research studies show that people living in the southern region are more dependent on spanking to control the behaviour of their children. Spankings lead to profound consequences. It causes aggression and depression among children. Parents who have experienced spanking in their childhood are likely to use the same method of disciplining or managing their children. Spankings make children believe that it is right to treat others with cruelty and it is acceptable to give pain to others. Abusive parents tend to spank their children more than other non-abusive parents. Spanking leads to maladaptive behaviour in children. Instead of controlling their behaviour it causes their behaviours to be out of control and much more aggressive. Parents use spanking to discipline their children because they depend on informal sources of information received from friends, relatives or other people in the social circle who tend to speak in favour of spanking to train children. Thus parents must seek advice from trained professional about adverse consequences of spanking and how it hurts psychical and psychological well-being of children (Walsh, 2002). The articles present strong evidence about what kind of impact spanking leaves on children and why parents practice is. The article uses results of past researchers and presents strong research about what impact spanking leavers on children and why it must be avoided.

There are many views from experts regarding spanking. Some believe that spanking is safe and necessary for children however others believe that spanking is harmful to children. Spanking is banned in about thirty-eight countries as they stand by the view that spanking negatively affects children and it must be avoided in any case. Spanking has different effects on children. It produces development problems, interferes with cognitive developments of children. Children who are spanked are likely to depend on drugs are likely to be engaged in substance misuse when they grow up into adults. Children who experience spanking may try to commit suicide too. Thus spanking affects the mental well-being of children. A lot of research has been that proves that spanking leads to harmful consequences. It does not produce any desirable outcome or a favourable outcome yet it tends to destroy the dignity of children. Spanking is against the rights of children. It’s a violation of human rights. Spanking must be avoided in any case. Parents need to be taught about positive methods of training and helping their children to adopt productive behaviours (Afifi & Romano, 2017). The article briefly explains consequences of spanking with getting into much detail or empirical evidence.

Spanking is done to achieve two main objectives. The first object is to control and the second objective is to inculcate fear if someone behaviours in a way not desired. Parents that spank children affect their behaviours. Children who are more often spanked tend to obey their children for the time being. But in the long run, they mostly disobey their children and develop much more aggression than those children who aren’t spanked by their parents. This article presents limited consequences of spanking and briefly talks about consequences of spanking (Gershoff, 2014).

Parents are the most important people in the life of children. Children look towards their parents to learn about various things. However, children demand love and affection from their parents. But parents, unfortunately, adopt spanking to make their children act in a certain way. This article precisely yet effectively use research evidence to explain one consequence of spanking that is violence. The article proves that children who are spanked more often are likely to be more violent in their behaviours and relationships when they are going to grow up., adults who express violent behaviour towards their partners have experienced spanking in childhood (Storrs, 2017).

This article presents a very different opinion than the rest of the articles. The article somehow contradicts opinions and ideas presents by the articles mentioned above. The article says that spanking is effective only in few cases. Spanking children for childish behaviour is ineffective. Children should only be spanked if they show some willful disobedience. Spankings might produce beneficial outcome if it is practised sometimes and only in extreme cases. Childish disobedience doesn’t require the need for spanking (PINGLETON, 2014).
