Self-Motivation to Follow a Leader

As a follower, I was motivated to admire and respect a leader who displayed high moral standards and qualities of idealized influence which I found in one of my college professors. This professor not only had a deep knowledge and understanding of the subject matter, but he also genuinely cared about their student’s success and personal growth. During my academic journey in college, I always found him demonstrating idealized influence by consistently displaying determination and ethical behavior in dealing with challenges within and outside the class settings. As his follower, his strong passion and work ethic for the subject and the deep knowledge, he always shared with conviction and enthusiasm motivated me to learn how to take a back seat to one very important trait, which is being a good follower. Observing him, experiencing with him, and following him, I realized that those that have never followed can never effectively lead in their life.

My professor possessed the characteristics of a transformational leader with his ability to guide and inspire his students towards their goals. I learned from my college professor how important it is to be a role model for others and to lead by example. It is only because of what he exemplified through his inspirational motivation and encouragement that his students could reach their full potential as he pushed us to excel in our academic pursuits. His example as a transformational leader shaped my leadership skills and overall goals by showing me the power of guiding and inspiring others. An individual who shows the importance of leading with integrity, setting a positive example for others, and treating each individual with respect and consideration can become an effective leader and a role model for others (Ibarra, 2015). The leadership style my professor possessed also inspired me to strive for my personal development and growth, not only for myself but also for those I would lead.
