The advancements made in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) have made life quite different from what it used to be some years back. It has made people use modern technological innovations such as computers, laptops, and smartphones. Through these devices, people have become able to use social media. One of the groups of people who have become obsessed with social media is the youth.
Research has revealed that many university students use social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Skype, Snapchat, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Orkut, Plaxo, Zone, Renren, Sina Weibo, Tagged, Tumblr, VK, YouTube, Viadeo, WAYN, Xanga.
One of the major challenges posed by these social websites is that they are addictive. This means that once a person starts using them, they continue doing so and are unable to stop that no matter how negatively it impacts their lives. Social media addiction is a real problem for college students because they are fond of using technology whenever they get an opportunity to do so. No matter its cause, social media addiction has caused serious problems for college students. First and foremost, it has resulted in mental illness. Excessive social media usage can cause psychological problems like stress, depression, anxiety, and trauma. Besides, social media addiction can cause illnesses like obesity and obesity-related diseases. Hence, when conducting this research, I will have to come up with the following objectives:
- To study the causes of social media addiction amongst college students.
- To analyze the psychological impacts of social media addiction in college learners.
- To investigate the diseases caused by social media addiction among college students.
