Reasons to Go to College

On finishing high school, one of the choices that people make is whether to further their education, which translates to going to university or college, or get a job and start planning their life right on. Different people will make different decisions on this issue. Recently, there has been an ongoing discussion on whether it is worthy for people to get college degrees. After graduation, college and university graduates are presented with an array of chances and openings, which might steer forward one’s interest to proceed to college. However, those that decide to continue to higher learning, I believe they will most likely be driven by three reasons; to make more money, to have more opportunities, and to live happier and healthier lives.

To start with, making more money is the biggest trigger to further one’s studies. With age comes with heightened financial responsibilities, which calls for the need for financial freedom. A college degree is the most basic route to careers demanding higher skills and offering better pays. Studies have depicted that college graduates earn substantially more money in their lifetime than people with only high school education. From reports by government agencies on education, graduates holding a bachelor’s degree can earn an average of more than fifty thousand in dollars every year compared to high school graduates who, on average, tend to earn about thirty thousand dollars in yearly pay. These significant earning gaps over the course of people’s lives serve as an incentive for people to join a college and pursue a degree in their dream field.

Secondly, people may decide to go to college to have more opportunities. For instance, going to college gives one a chance for a fresh start. People get a chance to lay down their old habits and strive to become the person they were meant to be. Particularly, this is reasonably true for young individuals transitioning from childhood to responsibilities-filled adulthood. College offers people with the opportunity to meet new people and learn new things. People have made lifelong friendships in colleges, with others even getting their spouses from college. Through college internships, students get the opportunity to trace their professional life and careers depending on their field of study and interests. Achieving independence is another opportunity that comes with joining a college. Young people, thus being far away from home, need to mature in their decision-making. College also gives people the opportunities to be their own guardian, responsible for whatever decisions they make and things they choose to engage in.

Lastly, leading a happier and healthier life is another common reason why people want to go to college. College graduates are less disposed to engage in health deteriorating activities such as taking drugs compared to their non-graduate peers. Furthermore, college graduates have been found to engage in healthy activities such as exercising and seeing a doctor regularly, maintain a healthy routine and weight, as well as wear seat belts. Thus, college graduates tend to lead a safer lifestyle, which increases happiness and contentedness. Notably, college graduates are at least five times less likely to get imprisoned or jailed. Furthermore, college graduates steer forward the civic movement. They tend to volunteer more than people with high school diplomas and contribute more to charity, and participate and vote in political elections at a substantially higher level. All these sums up to a better, healthier and happier life for college graduates.

In conclusion, it is evident from the above discussion that the three common reasons why people want to go to college include making more money, having more opportunities, and living a happier and healthier life. The merits and opportunities that come along with attending college outweigh the downsides such as expenses and time. Though many kids may not consider a college education as a worthy investment, most parents do and are thus well-informed of the opportunities awaiting those who go through with their college education. Observably, people may choose to go to college for reasons other than the ones discussed herein.
