Promote Equality and Inclusion in Care Settings

Understanding, accommodating and recognizing the vast diversity of individuals and groups in the contemporary British Society is the core goal of effective care practice. It is of great importance for those who work in various care settings to understand the significance of diversity, equality, and inclusion and how to endorse them in their work settings.
Diversity is the similarities and differences that individuals and groups have. Diversity can be regarding nationality, culture, ability, gender, age, ethnic origin, beliefs, religion, and others. Equality can be defined as treating people in a way that gives them the same opportunities and rights. Equality is a state of being fair to all. Equality involves promoting and respecting individual rights. Inclusion means adding or incorporating certain individuals within a specific group or structure, for example, the inclusion of the disabled with the non-disabled in care settings. Inclusion also includes valuing the vast diversity of individuals. Discrimination is an act or a decision of treating someone or a group unjustly because of different reasons such as their age, skin color, gender or even disability. Discrimination involves stereotyping, harassment, prejudice, lack of opportunity and others. There are several potential effects of discrimination which may include loss of self-esteem, emotional and physical torment to an individual. Discrimination can also harm a victim both socially and financially. It also hinders societal progress.

Inclusive practice promotes equality and supports diversity by being responsive to the needs of all individual users. Inclusion promotes equality and individual rights, empowering individuals, removing access barriers and such. Inclusion also respects and acknowledges diversity.

Legislation and the codes of practice that relate to equality, diversity, and discrimination provide laws and policies that protect both groups and individuals from discrimination. At my work setting, the staff must follow the Equality and Diversity policies which are incorporated into our work practice. Our work setting allows working with individuals in a way that respects their diversity regarding their culture, beliefs, and preferences.

How can one challenge discrimination in such a way that encourages change? One should never excuse or ignore any discriminating behavior, as it makes the person doing so feel as if the behavior is acceptable. One must respond to such behavior as for one to encourage change; one must change the attitude of people towards other cultures, races, religions, beliefs, and many others.
