Professional Development Plan Essay

The purpose of the personal professional development plan is to guide healthcare professionals specifically nurses to identify learning and development goals. The program assists nurses to discuss personal development needs and methodology to attain them. The plan includes the written instructions that lead to the provision of high-quality services to patients (Jackson & Thurgate, 2011).

The process of the development plan

The plan involves collaboration between nurses and managers while education and training allow managers to facilitate the process.

  • The plan provides adequate knowledge to nurses about existing resources and identification of goals.
  • It helps nurses in devising a strategy to attain those goals.
  • Through SWOT analysis they identify development needs.
  • It determines the role of the clinical nurse and determines the responsibilities they perform professionally (Jennings, 2007).
  • Through self-directed learning, nurses uncover their professional weaknesses and put more efforts to remove them.
  • The role of nurses is to use the plan as a development tool in clinical settings.
  • Self-directed learning will increase efficiency and allow nurses to act rationally in different situations.

I find the development program effective for the nursing profession as it helps in identification of personal goals that lead to personal development. I believe through professional development plans nurses are able to enhance their performance in clinical settings as they act according to the needs. I think self-directed learning is one of the most prominent benefits of the development plan as it motivates nurses to uncover the learning gap. through self-assessment, they can focus more on improving their professional behaviors. Self-directed learning has direct relevance with determination as it encourages nurses to identify why they need to learn. I find it more effective as it leads to rational judgment in different situations and helps to propose the best solution (Pullen, 2011).
