Positives And Negatives Of the Industrial Revolution

The industrial revolution started back in Europe and America in the 1700s when a variety of new products, inventions and new work methods were being developed for the benefit of mankind. Industrial development has turned into a revolution that has long-term positive and negative effects on the environment and the lives of people. The Industrial Revolution affected every facet of society, including industrialists, workers, factory owners and consumers.

Negatives of the Industrial Revolution

Poor Working Conditions

Due to the Industrial Revolution, the poor working conditions in the factories increased, with many workers working in tight spaces with poor lighting systems. It results in the injury or even death of many workers working in poor conditions. The legs and muscles of these workers do not work properly,y and they experience multiple healthcare problems due to unhealthy working conditions. The long working hours were another negative effect of the Industrial Revolution, which took the tools out of workers’ bodies. As a result, the workers often form unions and show their outrage against the management by doing strikes.

Poor Sanitary Conditions

The most common negative effect of the Industrial Revolution is the poor sanitary conditions in the urban cities due to chemical waste and increased industrialized activity. The streets of countries like England and the United States are usually unpaved with holes; due to the lack of drains and gutters, filth is increasing in the streets. The Manchester River presents a picture of coal black due to this problem. The factories are also releasing pollution heavily into the air,r which is affecting the health of both the poor and upper class.

The Positive Effects

Decline in Prices of Products

A positive effect of the Industrial Revolution was the decrease in prices. Without industry, the clothes were made by hand, which was the most expensive method. Most people have one or two pairs of pants and shirts, but people can buy hundreds of clothes nowadays due to cheaper prices and much more variety. Due to the introduction of machines, the prices have gone down, and the quality of fabrics has increased tremendously. Machines can spin eight threads per minute, which allows them to weave rapidly.

Increased production of Iron

The Industrial Revolution helped the world to become sufficient in the production of iron; by 1839, only one million tons of iron was produced, but the Industrial Revolution increased the production of iron to 1900 million tons in 1954. Iron is a vital ingredient used in the construction of trains, automobiles and planes. It has helped the transportation system and movement of goods. The working conditions in some factories have improved where iron is produced. It left a permanent mark on society, like the French Revolution, because being sufficient in the production of iron meant the improvement in the lives of the middle class.

Countries like England and the United States have become more powerful with the increased iron production. Therefore, they can regard the Industrial Revolution as the most important phenomenon in the world today. The availability of vehicles increases tourism and national income. For some countries, the main source of income is the export of iron and oil.
