Personality and Leadership
Beyond expertise
As the world keeps on changing, the rules also change in every aspect. You can never know the type of rules that you will come across in your new work place. Nevertheless, you should always be prepared to handle such situations. Different methods exist that can be put in use to avoid the instances where people are not able to perform well due to emotions. Many CEOs confirm that emotional intelligence is the leading factor that they are looking for in the current world. Workers perform best when they know how to handle their emotions at their workplace. Employers prefer people with great interpersonal skills to those who only have grades. It has proved that workers who are self motivated produce better results than the ones who only have good credentials with no self motivations to work. Employers do not only depend on the type of expertise that one has. They are really looking at the personality of the person as well as the ability of the worker to carry out their duties (Spencer, 1993).
Self mastery
In the old days, employers were concerned with the IQ of a person since they belief was that a person that performs well in class has high chances of producing good results at the place of work. The book does not support thus type of thought as it provides various instances of people doing various courses in college and joining different professions. The current world does not necessarily require one to do a course then a get a corresponding job from the market (Sharma, 1985). People are doing what they feel they love. Many people are failing interviews in the current world because they do not have the self motivation to carry out the work. It is good to have knowledge about the work one is going to do but it would be better if employee have the motivation to do the work. Some people have knowledge, for example, in teaching, but they fail to get the motivation on how to do it. It implies that there are high chances of their students failing compared to people who are motivated to teach. They have the knowledge but they cannot pass it to the students well because they do not have the self-drive. The employers are more willing to employ people with self-drive compared to the others (Williams, 2014).
A person with good emotional intelligence is a big asset compared to the others that just follow company rules and guidelines. Companies can only succeed in the current market if it has the ability to market itself well. In organizations, the employees that need emotional intelligence the most are those at the management positions. As a manager, you have to know how to deal with your employees. I feel that as a manager I would ensure that the employees are placed in their preferred departments where they will deliver well. As you move up towards the management positions, there are less of technical skills required and more of emotional management skills. As long as a manager is able to help in managing the emotions that the workers have, they will achieve in making them perform their tasks well (Mclelland, 1973).
Personal skills
The following are some of the most important skills that determine whether one will be hired by a given company or not:
- Communication skills. No company will want to hire a person that does not have the ability to communicate well with their clients. An employee with good communication skills helps in marketing the company.
- Team work. A company can only succeed if it has employees who collaborate with one another to take the company to the next level.
- Self control; for a company to hire a person, the company has to be sure that the person has the ability to make decisions where necessary. As a manager I would encourage my workers to keep finding new ways of doing what they love as this will eventually lead to innovation. The fact that workers are always given the chance to try out new methods on their own gives them the opportunity to learn from their mistakes and in turn come up with new ways of doing things.
- Self motivation: a group of workers that is motivated can increase the output from a company by a great percentage.
- Great interpersonal skill. When hiring a worker for my company, I would ensure that the person has skills that are beneficial to the company. People might have the same degree of knowledge since they all went to college. Some might have done the course out of pressure. It implies that when hiring the workers, I will have to do a lot of scrutiny do that I avoid those that do not have the best inter personal skills. The workers should be people who can easily relate with the clients that come to the company (Daniel, 2000).
Emotionally intelligent organization
An organization with employees who know how to control their emotions is the best that one can ever join. There are instances when a person might not have the moods to work as a result of the things they are going though. Some people extend such situations to the clients and this can really taint the image of the company. If a worker treats the clients in an unfriendly manner just because they cannot handle their emotions then the employee does not deserve to be part of the organization. The company should try as much as possible to get the services of an employee who is able to control feelings and emotions so that they do not make the clients feel bad about the company (William, 1910).
