|Defining Your Own Personal Bias
A personal code of ethics is that belief that one base their opinions and actions on. That’s the reason why it’s always recommended that when one is drafting their code of conduct, they ought to write what they firmly believe in. The first draft of the personal code of ethics takes stock of one’s life, and that is it captures the actual picture of who one is. It’s a reflection of who one believes he or she can be. To some extent, the first draft encompasses the philosophy behind an individual’s code of ethics. On the other hand, the final selection of a personal code of ethics capitalizes on why one believes in specific rules and what beliefs one expects to follow when dealing with other people for instance at the place of work. The questions that prompt the switch from first to final draft are for example; whether one is writing to inspire him or herself to greater heights or regulate his or her behaviors.
One’s code of ethics reflects the outward outfit as it displays some of the crucial features that pertain to an individual and these are honesty and integrity. As quoted earlier, a personal code of ethics is an actual reflection of who one believes to be, and that is the reason why this code of ethics is said to paint a picture of one’s moral stand as far as ethics are concerned. The system of ethics also indicates how one is ready to deal and interact with others and thus this is a clear indication that he or she can be entrusted with various roles and responsibilities and more so those that are in his or her line of duty.
Personal bias will always hurt somebody’s code of ethics as they make one not reflect what is in their code of conduct enclosure. For instance, one can be entrusted with dealing with a particular product as their code of conduct indicates that they are excellent in that, but to the surprise, they just dislike the assigned duty due to personal bias. A good example is where an individual is assigned the receptionist’s duty since he or she is said to have an excellent welcoming tone. Once the same receptionist finds that he or she is dealing with whites, he becomes uncomfortable because he hates them and it’s not that they are wrong but just because of personal bias (Irving, 2017). To counter the impact brought about by personal bias, one needs to work on his or her initial setting of the personal code of ethics and make sure that they don’t see what is right as unappealing.
