For America, it has become extremely important to reduce their national debt to increase their political and social stability. Out of several proposals for decreasing the national debt, I believe that the most important and possibly effective recommendation is to cut down the military and defense budget of the United States. In the past, it is evident that the defense and military budget of the United States has been immense. According to an estimate, “substituting civilian employees for Armed Service members to generate 10-year savings of $24 billion” (Lewis, 2016). Furthermore, after the challenges and exponential growth of the budget during the Afghan and Iraq war, the recommendations for cutting down the Defence budget have become more considerable. These wars have worsened the global situation of terrorism as Al-Qaeda has progressed to become ISIS while the US soldiers and weapons of war are trapped in Afghanistan and Iraq with little hope of success in future. According to an estimate, if the United States would only halt the purchase of F-35 Strike Fighter jets, they can save $8.4 billion (Lewis, 2016). Cutting down on the development of missiles, aircraft, etc. can generate more revenue for the welfare of the overall American society including the reduction in their national debt. The defense budget has become a white elephant for the United States that is eating up the resources of the American economy.
