Thesis Statement

Even though the English language is difficult to learn but it is important to learn English in the modern world because of its universal use worldwide. English is an essential international language for survival in the world, and the technology has made it simple to learn English for people of any age.

Introduction

Language is our primary source of communication, and it is impossible for human beings to share their thoughts and ideas without language. There are hundreds of languages spoken in Europe, America, Asia, Africa and South America by the people in various regions, but the English language is the most popular and important language in the world today.

Background and Significance

The English language was the language of English people in England, but it has slowly become the primary language of many largest countries in the world including United States, Australia, Canada, and India. English has taken the status of official language of business and education in the powerful countries like Germany, Norway, Swee den, China, and India. There are some reasons why English is the essential to learn in our technology dominant global environment. It is the most commonly spoken foreign language. Two people coming from different parts of the world can communicate in English in America or England without knowing each other’s languages. To get in touch with the international level, the English language is essential for learning.

This article describes the importance of learning English as a foreign language which is the most popular language in the advanced countries for communicating with the foreign people. According to IB tutor,  The author describes why English is important to learn in the modern technological world today and what are the reasons for learning English as an international language? According to Naved, the education is the most important reason for learning English. English is the language of education in many countries and courses are taught in universities in English. School children are also encouraged to learn the English language from the early age in the countries where English is not spoken as the primary language. All the scientific and engineering research is published and translated in English to make the research material available to international community more easily.

According to the results shown in the article, there are more than 94.2 percent English-speaking people in the United States alone. In Pakistan, 49% people understand and speak English whereas 97.34% people speak English in the United Kingdom. 64% people speak English in Germany and 85.6% in Canada. The majority of websites on the internet are created in the English language. English is the primary language of journalism and press, books and newspapers are published in English than in any other language in various parts of the world. In this article, Santillana describes why English is so important and why so many people learn it as a second language? The author states that one out of the five people in the world can understand or speak English. It is the language of aviation, science, diplomacy, computers and multinational companies. In 53 countries, English is used as an official language, and almost 400 million people speak English as their primary language. English is based on simple alphabets which are easier to learn than the alphabets of many other foreign languages including French and Japanese. English provides a lot of satisfaction to its speakers, and they feel great about themselves. Learning English is also fun at school and college level, and it helps to learn about different cultures. In this article the author describes why English is a challenging language to learn and what difficulty students face in learning it as a foreign language? Learning English may become tricky at times, the vocabulary of English is the largest and trickiest in the world. There are so many words that need to be kept in the memory to enable someone to communicate and write in English. In this respect, English becomes one of the most difficult languages to master. English words are often difficult to spell, they sound so different, and it makes the learning process slow for the international learners. There are so many rules one has to follow regarding spellings and punctuation, otherwise, they might end up conveying a different meaning. Written English is more formal than the written English; Slang is another problem for the international learners to master English. The English language is also full of idioms which often do not make sense to readers. Phrases like ‘fat chance’ and ‘turn a blind eye’ need learning their meanings than to interpret them as they sound. English grammar is also full of subtlety. The tenses are complex for learners to master with complexity and different meanings. Learners struggle with idiomatic variations and pronunciation problems. Chinese and Japanese speakers find it hard to differentiate between ‘r’ and ‘l’ sounds; the number of consonants also confuses the learners. (Anon)

In this research paper the writer William describes the problems of learning English as a second language in the Indian education system. The students from various localities, habits, and religion learn English in India; the teaching environment is a big hurdle in learning the most important language of the world. Boys in India face more problems while learning English as compared to girls when a survey was done on 400 students due to lack of listening and reading habits. This article is helpful to understand that every country is struggling to compete with the World and this competition can never be done without have command on the English language. The research paper Dr. Alaadin and Ghanim Hussein in College of Education, University of Kirkuk identifies the difficulties that students face in learning linguistics subjects as English. The research revealed that students feel the difficulties with vocabulary, essay writing, sentence structure and challenges in learning base and affixes. Students also had difficulties with learning vowels. The teachers do an excellent job to help them learn, but students still find it hard to learn English due to lack of will power and hard work (Abdullah)

Conclusion

Even though English is the essential language of international students and international people who rely heavily on their English written and spoken communication skills to do a great job in a profession, education, and business, there are still many difficulties faced by the individuals who try to learn English as their second language. The English language is not complex, it is fun to learn but the vocabulary, structure, grammar. Slang, idioms, and punctuation make it confusing for some foreigners to master. Moreover, the research in India has found that English is children face difficulty because of their environment that needs improvement. The learning of English can be made fun and easy if teachers and students make a collaborative effort to promote the English language in their community and make as much effort whole heartedly to make steps easy to provide English learning. The future belongs to those who know English as a second language with their primary language. Survival in the world is hard without learning English.
