Leadership and its Qualities Essay

Leadership is having dominance or authority over other individuals or managing, governing, controlling and giving directives to other people in an organization. A leader must have certain qualities that enhance his or her efficiency when managing and controlling others, and also to gain respect and recognition from those being led. There are a lot of leadership qualities that one must possess, but some are essential than others. A good leader must be an excellent communicator, courageous, honest, humble, inspiring, confident, focused, cooperating, visional, strategist, and should have integrity.I can be an honest, courageous, visional, confident and strategic leader. Some of the leadership qualities such as strategic planning are learnt through life experiences while others such as honesty, courage, and confidence are factors that one is born with and only requires knowing how to utilize them. Hence, I will acquire my leadership style by learning from others and mastering how to utilize the ones I already possess.Although a manager controls and gives directives to a group of people, there is a crucial difference between him or her and a leader. Managers lead individuals working for them while leaders have authority over people following them. For example, a politician is a leader since one follows him by choice and must obey his authority and directives. On the other hand, a CEO of a particular company is a manager since those being led are following his authority and instructions because they are working for him.According to Chip Conley, we need to measure the intangible things in life as leaders. He states that “not everything counts can be counted and not everything can be counted counts.” I agree with him concerning what we should measure because some important aspects are ignored or are not noticed until something happens or is said. The thing that happens or is said can have positive or negative impacts; thus, it’s better not to wait until that time comes and evaluate the potentials of a particular element despite it being intangible.
