Internet of Things (IoT) Essay

A lot of things have changed since the invention of the IoT. Most people do not understand that drone is an example of IoT. According to Davies (2015), Drones are connected with a sensitive camera to gather data and relay it to the central server immediately for analysis. It is being sent to the battlefield and other unreachable environments to collect information which can be useful for the community. Besides being used in battlefield areas, the system is used for security purposes to provide real-time video for various locations. Therefore, IoT has facilitated the improvement of security; it also provides consumers with an option to connect to homes, clothing, automobile, accessories and other activities which are conducted daily so that monitoring them can be effective. As stated by Davies (2015), IoT has overhauled the way people interact with technology and also changed the way humans use and apply information technology in their daily lives.

The IoT has changed how enterprises conduct business and specially conducted market research and information about customers. It is noted that several organizations do not depend on the report from the distributors or supply chain. Davies (2015) illustrated that organizations had installed sensors at their warehouses and stores to monitor and remove the behavior of customers to allow them to understand the market segment (Davies, 2015).

Approach to the Need for IoT

The IT companies must come to the realization of faster and more reliable internet to relay data to most servers across the globe and also must upgrade infrastructures to be able to provide IoT services which are the latest technology being applied by several organizations. The IoT requires especially standardization and codes for it to operate effectively and therefore, it is important for IT companies must define the code and improve internet infrastructure so that IoT can operate without facing internet breakdown. It is noted that by 2020 all devices shall be interconnected to deliver data to a specific destination, and for this to operate, the industry will require several professionals in the field and the best equipment which can accommodate the intended flow of data. The installation of IoT requires servers, internet connection, and devices, sensors or identifiers which are connected. It requires an organization to conduct broad research to understand topology so that it can avoid frequent breakdowns which can interfere with the operations of devices under IoT.

An essential signpost of the basic importance of the IoT concept is the calculated activities of major ICT vendors or firms in the provision of IoT services. The organizations that provide telecom, industrial infrastructure, cloud computing networking, and enterprise systems must derive a strategy to offer IoT services. It will transform the broader economy to improve connectivity. Examples of some of the leading IT companies in the provision of IoT services are Amazon Web, AT&T, Ericsson, Cisco, and IBM, which leads to the transformation of ICT worldwide (Lucero, 2016). It integrates devices together and allows them to share information efficiently.

The Future impact of IoT

It is predicted that IoT intends to alter the world, and by 2020 almost 26 billion devices shall be connected together. The IoT services are also expected to generate approximately USD 300 billion annually. The customers would be able to get customised products and sell at ease; they would also be able to travel without experiencing traffic jams since IoT would provide alternative routes when the car is connected to IoT. Above all, companies have started manufacturing cars which are connected at a central to offer self-driven services. Tesla and Google have launched self-drive cars to provide taxi services, and more are expected by 2020. The future computer system or internet connection is expected to be faster and more efficient to provide mass self-drive cars in populous cities like New York and other cities where such services have been launched.

The IoT will also facilitate the tagging of human beings with a sensor so that data related to various activities can be transmitted. According to Mohammed and Elmustafa (2017), IoT will allow physicians and doctors to monitor and track the health status of patients. The revolution of IoT will allow the installation of sensors and identifiers to anyone so that if there are any changes in the health status, information is sent promptly to the doctors for analysis and quick action. Therefore, customers would be healthier, safe and protected due to IoT devices (Mohammed & Elmustafa, 2017). The IoT is a greater charger in the IT field, which intends to connect devices and allow them to exchange data as well.

The IoT will allow organizations to offer better services to a customer after studying customers’ behaviour and the need for the products. The technology is installed at shops and on customers to allow it to collect and deliver data appropriately (Khatu, Neethu, Pratik, & Syedali, 2015). These will allow companies to collect related data about customers so that a company can design a product or improves the service delivery based on the result of the data analyzed. However, the intention of most researchers is to connect devices which were not previously connected, such as aircraft, cars, and others to make sure that they can be traced and also gather data at the same time. According to Khatu, Neetu, Pratik, and Syedali (2015), aircraft can be connected to other devices so that it can collect data related to weather and temperature as well which can be useful in weather planning. It is expected that the internet will connect different sources of information such as mobile phones, computers, human being sensors, laptops and security devices so they can transmit data appropriately to the relevant servers. The IoT is expected to revolutionize the ICT industry to bring a change in business and how to manage a business as well.

The linking of education with technology brings about equality. Learning institutions established across the nation are not equally structured. Royal Observatory Greenwich observed that there is a significant disparity in the resources available in the education sector regarding the wealth or the lack of accordingly, depending on the region or area where the institution is established. Students from low-income areas, who have access to technology, can obtain significant skills and advantages in their schooling and learning processes. The use of similar technology in schools across the country acts as an equalizer for the less fortunate and disadvantaged learners.

The world is progressing so had in the field of science and technology that current university students are known as the generation of the net. It is a fact that:

‘Because of media and internet world has turned into a global village”.

Everything has its advantages and disadvantages. Multitasking which is defined as the involvement of two or more individuals in a task, leads to poor performance due to continuous switching and disruptions (Van Der et al.,2015). It has been proved that media and multitasking have a negative relationship with the academic performance of individuals. Out of 43 studies, 17 studies suggested the same result. It is a borderline case. Some studies show that multi-tasking and media enhance academic performance. Different surveys have shown that students related to fields of art, communication and other subjects like this tend to gain more from this multitasking computer age while students related to science subjects are left blank. The main aim of this article is to demonstrate that different subjects are used to attract students of different thinking styles. Interest leads to the success or failure of a student. The results of surveys are not authentic because of different school policies and their analyzing criteria. But the fact here is that somehow multitasking is affecting the performance of students.

In a world dominated by technology, the latest advancement is as good as the next development coming up down the line. The automotive industry is continually updating new technologies in their products, be it for usefulness, safety, innovation or real security. Most of car technologies are either specifically designed for safety measures or are at least focused on safety. These advancements are exciting and have the capability of revolutionizing not only the automotive industry as well as the human transportation and commuting sector. Such advancements have a positive impact on the transport industry and are recommendable. This essay will explore some of the latest technologies together with their roles and advantages.

One of the technological advancements featured in cars is the drivers’ overdrive systems. This is related to autonomous technology, but it is a bit different in the sense that it allows the car to actively ignore and disregard the driver’s commands and inputs, making and executing its own decisions. Some of the cars are fitted with this technology and can stop on their own even if the driver fails to apply brakes. It is perceived that by the year 2020, it is projected that vehicles will be using brakes on their own even if the driver has his foot on the gas pedal. There will be a change in priorities due to the rapid increase and advancement in sensor technology, letting the automobile make the ultimate decision.

Another critical technology in cars is the biometric accessibility of the vehicle. In the recent past and the current years, there has been a shift from a key to a keyless entry into a car. There is also a key-fob-less entry and ignition as compared to the crucial analogous timer. This will enable people to access and unlock as well as start their cars without the use of keys but rather with their fingerprints. There is also a technology possibility that will enable accessibility and ignition of a vehicle’s use of eyeballs. However, the application of retina scanners in vehicles is less likely compared to fingerprint readers. This will not only make the automotive industry exciting and interesting but will also enhance security and safety, reducing the levels of carjacking and theft

While technology might impact human beings positively, it does have a negative effect on the environment. This takes the form of light, water, noise, and air pollution. Technology has several uses at home, workplaces, and education centres. Electric energy is needed to make them work. This calls for the production of energy through nuclear fuels or coal-burning power plants, which adversely affect the environment. During the process of mining uranium, fuel used in power plants, high amounts of carbon dioxide is released into the environment.

Pollution could take place at the beginning or at the end of a technological device. In the process of upgradation, worn out or outdated devices are disposed of into the environment, which in turn pollutes it. According to a California-based company known as GreenCitizen, electronics account for around 2-5 percent of American trash. These devices contain matter that is harmful to the environment. For instance, lead present in device screens can have health effects like nerve disorders and brain damage to individuals. Additionally, in the making of these technological devices, industries tend to release chemicals in the air and water. This is accelerated further by trends to keep up with technology.

Cyber Bullying

Many discoveries to do with technology facilitate communication between individuals. Creation of friendships, meeting others online and connecting with individuals that share similar interests are among the fruits of instant messaging, websites, and chat platforms. However, this creates an opportunity for bullies who find the Internet as a place to feel anonymous. Cyberbullying can be termed as the act of bullies inflicting intentional harm using emails, text messages or websites. It is often a criminal act though cyberbullies are difficult to track, or many cases may go unreported.

Cyberbullying takes place through online fights, harassment in the form of mean messages, impersonation, sharing an individual’s secrets and stalking. This forbidden act has its effects on not only the emotional state but also the mental. Individuals from all walks of life are affected, including children, teenagers and grownups. With the easy availability of means to cause harm, no one can be regarded to be safe. Individuals that are bullied are left in a state of worry and distress. Also, the affected suffer from low-self esteem and may withdraw from social settings to spend time by themselves. In extreme cases, bullying on the internet scope has led to suicide or self-harm (Gordon 2017).

Depression

According to the American Psychiatric Association, depression is a medical illness that affects how one feels, thinks and acts. The effect of technology on depression is attributed to its overuse in day-to-day activities. The Internet offers unlimited access to news and entertainment from all over the world which could cause digital information overload. In the article, 5 ways technology might be feeding your depression, Joel Lee tells us that our minds simply are not able to handle that kind of constant influx of information without making some big changes along the way. However, the Internet can be used to fight depression, and varieties of information when surfing ends up making the brain feel bored when away from it.

In recent research, people who would be termed to be addicted to the Internet score higher on depression scales as compared to those who have limited access to technology. This is due to the fact that technology may offer some sense of comfort or make them less sensitive during stressful conditions. Depression may arise when individuals are in a worse mood than they were before accessing the Internet. Although social media is advantageous for socializing, social sites tend to create unidealistic ideas of other peoples’ lives that can cause depression.

In conclusion, technology should not dictate our lives instead, we should choose how to use it wisely. This requires the usage of technology in the right amount and not overdoing it to the extent of environmental degradation, criminal activities within its sphere, and harm to the mental and physical wellness of human beings. It should also be noted that technological advancements should be handled with measures carefully crafted even in the most unpredictable of circumstances.
